FRESH satellite images reveal the devastation at a Russian airbase after it was struck by a series of powerful explosions. Broken and charred remains of Russian fighter jets can be seen at the air force base in occupied Crimea, following a reported Ukrainian airstrike on Tuesday afternoon. Russia had previously denied any of its aircraft were damaged in the blast at Saki airbase in Western Crimea , just miles from beaches popular with Russian visitors. The suspected Ukrainian attack left at least one person dead, up to 20 aeroplanes destroyed, and around $1 billion of damage, according to Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs. On Wednesday, a clip reportedly taken from the base revealed the scorched remains of a £19m Russian fighter jet destroyed on the base. Russia has again denied that any aircraft were damaged in the blasts - even refusing to acknowledge that any attack had taken place - bizarrely putting the incident down to an … [Read more...] about Satellite pics show devastation at Russian base with ’20 jets destroyed and $1bn of damage’ after mushroom cloud blasts

Mother of police shooting victim Steven Wallace loses civil appeal
The mother of police shooting victim Steven Wallace has suffered a double blow in her more than 20-year fight for accountability for her son’s death, with the Court of Appeal on Monday rejecting her case and overturning a previous win. Raewyn Wallace, whose son was shot in the Taranaki town of Waitara in 2000, had taken a novel legal claim that her son had the right not to be deprived of life . Steven Wallace, then 23, was shot by Senior Constable Keith Abbott after he attacked the police station and a police car with a golf club. Wallace died soon after. The Crown decided not to prosecute Abbott, so the Wallace family brought a private prosecution. But in 2002 a jury acquitted the police officer on the grounds of self-defence. Lib Dem plan to solve the energy crisis is radical – but at least they have one
If there's one thing that this Government is really good at, it is doing nothing. They have turned it into an art form – a meeting here, a conflab there, briefed details of a hastily-arranged emergency summit designed to show purpose yet utterly devoid of substance. Seeing to do rather than actually doing is how Boris Johnson’s administration will be remembered. If the race to succeed him is anything to go by, it is a style of leadership that may persist. Nowhere is this troubling approach more evident than the response to the energy crisis. The latest predictions for bills are frightening for those on low incomes: £4,267 a year by January, which is £650 more expensive than previously thought; and more than £4,400 annually by April, according to analysts at Cornwall Insight. Meanwhile UK households owe £1.3bn to their energy suppliers, three times higher than a year ago, with six million households more than £200 in debt on average, according to Uswitch, and winter is still … [Read more...] about Lib Dem plan to solve the energy crisis is radical – but at least they have one
Macron says Putin using gas as ‘weapon of war’ amid rationing fears
F rench President Emmanuel Macron has accused Russia of using energy as a “weapon of war” as the chief executive of oil and gas giant Shell warned gas rationing in Europe this winter was possible. Mr Macron yesterday told citizens to "prepare for a scenario where we have to manage completely without Russian gas." "The summer, early autumn will be very hard," he said. "Russia is using energy, like it is using food, as a weapon of war." He said the government would prepare a "sobriety plan" to conserve energy, which would start with turning off public lights at night when they aren't useful. "We need a general mobilisation," Mr Macron said in a televised address for Bastille Day. Ben van Beurden, chief executive of Shell, echoed the French president’s remarks, saying Russia had shown it is “able and willing to weaponise energy supplies.” Mr van Beurden said Moscow had “surprised” the market and told governments to be prepared for the Kremlin to restrict gas further. “For a … [Read more...] about Macron says Putin using gas as ‘weapon of war’ amid rationing fears

Man Utd flops forced to run telltale distance in extra training after Brentford debacle
Erik ten Hag reportedly made his Manchester United flops run 8.5 miles (13.8km) in training after hearing Brentford outran his players by that distance. The Dutchman's side was dismantled in every department by the Bees who ran out 4-0 winners at the Gtech Community Stadium. After the humiliation, Ten Hag ripped into his players, questioning their commitment and hunger, in comparison to their opponents. Goals from Josh Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee, and Bryan Mbeumo wrapped up a historic three points for Brentford before half-time. And a furious and perhaps shellshocked Ten Hag ensured his players would not forget their failure, cancelling their day off and forcing them to run the same distance as the Brentford players.
