Updated 1514 GMT (2314 HKT) September 17, 2018 (CNN)Imagine if one day Jennifer Lawrence was walking the red carpet in Los Angeles and the next she vanished completely with no word about where she was. It might sound ludicrous, or terrifying, but it's the reality in China, where one of the country's most famous actresses has disappeared without a trace amid an uproar over tax evasion by celebrities. Fan Bingbing, one of China's highest-paid and most bankable stars, has appeared in both Chinese and Western films, including the multimillion-dollar X-Men franchise. Across the country, her face once adorned thousands of advertisements, her star power used to sell a galaxy of luxury brands, from Cartier to Louis Vuitton. She was a regular sight at major award shows and fashion ceremonies. In 2015, Time Magazine named her China's "most famous actress." But the film star hasn't been seen in public since early June, when, according to a post on her verified social-media account, she … [Read more...] about Has China’s most famous actress been disappeared by the Communist Party?
Sign language interpreters swung their hips and gestured at deaf audience members to the rhythm of a rollicking performance by drag queens singing and dancing on stage behind them. Nothing surprising for a Broadway show, except this is China. The Tony award-winning musical "Kinky Boots" has broken new ground in the socially conservative nation. The show has filled theatres in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, lighting up audiences in a country where LGBT-themed entertainment is often censored and rarely gets major -- if any -- billing. It also has reached a broader audience than usual in China: "Kinky Boots" was the first musical to offer sign language interpreters for the hearing-impaired in the country. "It's very inspiring because for many years for me as a deaf person, subtitles were the only thing available in a theatre. But now I've got access to the whole show," Junhui Yang told AFP at a recent performance in Beijing. Interpreters memorised the entire show and never looked back … [Read more...] about ‘Kinky Boots’ encourages Chinese drag queens to ‘be themselves’
THESE horrific images from a Chinese slaughterhouse reveal the suffering thousands of animals endure ahead of the cruel Yulin dog meat festival in China. They show dogs cramped together in tiny, rusty cages before they are dragged out by the neck and beaten over the head. The pups, some of whom are pets snatched from their owners, are then de-haired and blowtorched to be sold at the brutal festival which has been condemned by activists. As many as 50 dogs are killed at the abattoir every day, according to charity Humane Society International who filmed the grim conditions inside. It reveals the first disturbing glimpses of preparations for this year's dog meat festival in China's Guangxi Autonomous Region. Fortunately the charity managed to negotiate the release pf 135 dogs from three facilities in the Yulin suburbs. They will have been driven for hours, or even days, across the country before reaching the slaughterhouse where they are beaten to death. Cell phone photos taken by … [Read more...] about Inside China’s horrific dog slaughterhouses where dead animals are blowtorched before being sold at Yulin Festival
