HOMES Under the Hammer host Martin Roberts could not contain his dismay as he gasped "oh dear" during a tour of an auction property. The BBC host was quick to point out a major structural problem with the house expressing his fear for the new owners. Martin's potentially expensive find came as he looked over a former registry office in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. With the property up for auction with a fairly low guide price of £70,000 to £85,000, Martin's alarms bells were already ringing. Beginning his viewing of the property, Martin mused: "What have we got? A nice little entrance area, a grand staircase, you want to strip that back. "And then a large reception room, immediately you get this feeling it’s probably Victorian, big windows, high ceilings. “Slightly disappointing kitchen which probably bears reference to its more recent past. “Into this rear living room area and obviously a bit of an extension to suit the fact this was the ceremony room where weddings … [Read more...] about Homes Under the Hammer’s Martin Roberts gasps ‘oh dear’ after noticing major problem with property

German conservatives split by search for Merkel’s successor
The race to succeed Angela Merkel as the 2021 chancellor candidate for Germany's biggest political bloc has come down to the two men who also happen to be the two most powerful state premiers in Germany: North Rhine-Westphalia's Armin Laschet and Bavaria's Markus Söder . The stakes could not be higher. Whoever wins this week would likely become the favorite to be Germany's next chancellor after September. Both are the current leaders of the two parts of the conservative alliance that has dominated German politics since the foundation of the Federal Republic in 1949: Laschet heads the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), while Söder runs its Bavaria-only sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU). A week of tense negotiations is now underway, with observers wondering who will break rank first. Watch video 02:10 Share Who will succeed Merkel?
