On Monday the Vatican's doctrine office said the Church could not bless same-sex unions as God "cannot bless sin". The declaration was approved by Pope Francis, who has expressed support for gay couples. Many members of the LGBT community were outraged, including British singer-songwriter Sir Elton. Catholic Church 'cannot bless same-sex unions' "How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they 'are sin,' yet happily make a profit from investing millions in 'Rocketman' - a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David??" Bristol’s St Pauls carnival future in doubt after funding withdrawn

Bristol City Council and Arts Council England said it was withholding funds from St Pauls Afrikan Caribbean Carnival (SPACC) with immediate effect. In a statement, the council said its funding criteria included a carnival but SPACC had failed to deliver one in 2015 and had no "clear plans" for 2016. Cleo Lake, from SPACC, said she "cannot understand" the decision. The annual carnival, which is a celebration of the city's Afro-Caribbean culture, dates back to the 1960s and is normally held in July. It is one of the biggest of its kind in Europe, with tens of thousands of people attending in 2014 . Figures sourced by the BBC show many Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) patients are being discharged just months after starting treatment. Action for ME chief executive Sonya Chowdhury said ME had been "neglected for decades" with patients finding services "inaccessible". Health Secretary Sajid Javid has announced plans to better tackle ME . Stephen Hocking from Keswick, Cumbria, was diagnosed with ME 15 months ago and said the condition had been "devastating", but there was a lack of medical understanding. York’s Castle Mills development delayed until 2023

Work on Castle Mills has stalled after City of York Council ended its contract with construction firm Wates The decision means the project, which includes new apartments and a riverside park, will not start before mid-2023. The council say the project, which will link to the Castle Gateway scheme, is making "significant progress" but critics say it is "drifting". A council report said the decision to terminate the contract with Wates came after issues with Covid and rising costs, but also design points, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service . Bristol’s St Pauls Carnival set to partly return with live events
Published 28 February Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Organisers of St Pauls Carnival have announced plans to return to live carnival activities with a series of community events in the summer. The Bristol carnival, which has been digital since 2020 due to the pandemic, usually draws thousands to its celebrations of diversity and culture. Event director LaToyah McAllister-Jones said she was "thrilled" the programme will include features like the school's performance and Elders' Brunch. The full carnival will return in 2023. Ms McAllister-Jones said although the team had hoped to bring "the full, vibrant celebrations of St Pauls Carnival back to the streets this year", ongoing uncertainty around the pandemic had impacted carnival plans and fundraising events. Leeds Rhinos legends Burrow and Sinfield complete city’s 10k

Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2019 and has since raised millions of pounds for charity. The former Rhinos joined the club's team to raise money for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and the Rob Burrow Centre for MND appeal. Sinfield said it was "brilliant" to complete the course together. "It's been a while since we have been able to do some sort of running or activity," he said. Bristol’s St Pauls carnival return ‘hopeful’

St Pauls Carnival, not staged since 2014, grew beyond organisers' means, Bristol City Council said when funding was withdrawn. A new community partnership has been formed to run future events, and next year's carnival is planned for 1 July. Bristol mayor Marvin Rees is widely expected to approve funding next week. Deputy mayor Estella Tincknell is "hopeful" it will go ahead and said: "We want to make sure the carnival is on a sustainable footing for the future." Good Morning Ulster has discovered that staff at some private care homes are only offered statutory sick pay if they take ill. Some of these staff have contracted the virus from residents in the homes. When it comes to statutory sick pay for staff, care home owners are fully operating within the law. Some employers however agree to pay employees their salary for a specified period of time when they are on sick leave. Patricia McKeown, regional secretary for Unison, said it was a widespread issue across the private care home sector that staff were not being supported if they contracted Covid-19 while at work.
