A nuclear war between two countries would be enough to plunge the world into a “Little Ice Age”, scientists have warned. Researchers found that even nations not involved in the dispute would suffer crop failures and plummeting temperatures, as the soot and smoke from nuclear firestorms thousands of miles away would block out the sun. In the first month following nuclear detonation, average global temperatures would plunge by about 13F - a larger temperature change than in the last Ice Age, warned experts from Louisiana State and Rutgers universities. As the planet became colder, sea ice would expand by more than six million square miles and 6ft deep in some basins, blocking major ports including Beijing’s Port of Tianjin, Copenhagen and St Petersburg. The sea ice would spread into normally ice-free coastal regions, blocking shipping across the Northern Hemisphere - making it difficult to get food and supplies into some cities. The sudden drop in light and ocean … [Read more...] about Nuclear war would be enough to plunge the whole world into a ‘Little Ice Age’

Which BBC characters are most popular across the world? The Germans adore Basil Fawlty
It’s fine to mention the war after all. A survey of international attitudes to BBC programmes has found that the Germans adore Basil Fawlty. Audiences from different countries were asked to name their favourite television characters, both comedic and dramatic, for a BBC Worldwide showcase poll. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock came top in every territory. But while most of the other countries nominated Doctor Who as the next most popular character, Germany chose John Cleese’s 1970s hotelier. They also showed a fondness for Edmund Blackadder, placing him sixth in their top 10. The final Blackadder series was set in the First World War trenches, with Rowan Atkinson playing Blackadder as a wily captain doing his best to avoid a deadly encounter with “Fritz”. Fawlty Towers was not shown in Germany until 1993, such was the sensitivity around the episode titled The Germans. It featured a goose-stepping Cleese yelling: ‘Don’t mention the war!’ before a group of mortified … [Read more...] about Which BBC characters are most popular across the world? Forget Nato. We need a new world alliance to take on totalitarian capitalists in Russia and China
No two countries with a McDonald’s ever go to war: it was the kind of tale a naive, trusting world preoccupied with spending its Cold War peace dividend wanted to hear. So when Thomas Friedman, the US author, coined his Golden Arches theory of conflict prevention back in 1996, the idea was lapped up enthusiastically. It was an exhilarating, hopelessly optimistic take, perfect for a pre-9/11, pre-internet era that still believed in unstoppable economic and political progress. Friedman’s screed, later expanded into a book, was merely the latest to argue that some freedom begets more freedom: 19th-century economic liberals saw free trade not just as a means of generating prosperity but also of replacing war with peace, military empires with commerce. They argued that free trade raises the cost of armed conflict, reducing its prevalence. More contemporary thinkers went even further, positing that with the universal adoption of capitalism would also come mass democracy. Consumers used to … [Read more...] about Forget Nato. What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion
Since the start of the coronavirus crisis, Russia had received criticism in international media over its response to the pandemic. In reality, the country is setting an example others can learn from in many vital areas. Russia is one of the global leaders in testing for the virus, in producing efficient drugs and it is rapidly approaching mass production of its own vaccine. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the country's sovereign wealth fund, has played a key role in fighting the virus in Russia. We learned about the threat in late January from our network of international partners, advised the government in its assessment of it and moved ahead with investment. With countries like the United States predicted to reach a staggering 100,000 cases a day, it is important that we quickly develop focused solutions based on proven technologies with no time to spare. We believe that RDIF has now developed key elements of such a practical solution. Working jointly with some of … [Read more...] about What Russia got right about the coronavirus—and what it can share with the world | Opinion
