Eschewing the typical snowy alpine scenes that usually form the backdrop to the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, delegates and visitors to the 2022 event are instead being greeted by green mountainscapes and warm sunshine (for the most part). The WEF 2022 is meeting in springtime rather than January - when it is traditionally held - for the first time, having been postponed on multiple occasions by COVID-19. Besides the novelty that the change of season brings, the WEF is meeting at a crucial time. In its 50-year history, the WEF has never been confronted with such unprecedented global issues as it now faces in 2022, as the world recovers from a global pandemic, grapples to contain the devastating impact of the climate crisis, and navigates a geopolitical storm following the invasion of Ukraine. "Davos will be different, but not mainly because of the lack of snow but because of lack of global co-operation to solve these most pressing challenges," … [Read more...] about Davos 2022: What to expect from the World Economic Forum’s most consequential meeting in 50 years

AP PHOTOS: Moroccan mimics Charlie Chaplin to mask hardships
When 58-year-old Moroccan Belhussein Abdelsalam was arrested and lost his job three decades ago, he saw Charlie Chaplin on television and in that moment decided upon a new career: impersonating the British actor and silent movie maker remembered for his Little Tramp character. Abdelsalam has been performing on the streets of Morocco’s capital nearly every day since then. Making people laugh in Rabat provides a meager living: He earns under $150 a month from tips. But he is proud to be the street side celebrity known to residents simply as Charlo. The former sports photographer sees parallels between himself and the screen legend, whose humor and painted face hid a deep well of painful childhood memories. In the same way, imitating Chaplin gave Abdelsalam a comedic mask to hide his own sadness and hardships. “It was when I lost everything that I became Charlie Chaplin, (who) made the world laugh and cry without saying a word,” he said. “He is a unique person who … [Read more...] about AP PHOTOS: Moroccan mimics Charlie Chaplin to mask hardships
Sri Lanka defaults on debt for first time in its history
By Peter Hoskins Published 2 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Sri Lanka has defaulted on its debt for the first time in its history as the country struggles with its worst financial crisis in more than 70 years. A 30-day grace period to come up with $78m (£63m) of unpaid debt interest payments expired on Wednesday. The governor of the South Asian nation's central bank said the country was now in a "pre-emptive default". Later on Thursday, two of the world's biggest credit rating agencies also said Sri Lanka had defaulted. Defaults happen when governments are unable to meet some or all of their debt payments to creditors. It can damage a country's reputation with investors, making it harder for it to borrow the money it needs on international markets, which can further harm confidence in its currency and economy. Asked on Thursday whether the … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka defaults on debt for first time in its history
Today’s troops reflect on World War One
By Frank Gardner Published 10 November 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing This year is special for remembrance, for two reasons. It marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War One, dubbed by that generation as the Great War, a four-year conflict in which over eight million servicemen and women were killed, nearly one million of them from Britain and its empire. It also marks the end of British combat operations in Afghanistan, a war which technically has lasted for 13 years but which only began in earnest for Britain in the summer of 2006. The conflict cost the lives of 453 British troops, sent thousands more home with injuries, many life-changing, and became the distant yet defining military conflict of our generation. So autumn 2014 is an appropriate time for reflection. How can we do more to avoid wars in the future? If we do have to wage them, how can … [Read more...] about Today’s troops reflect on World War One
Black Lives Matter paid $1.8m to companies owned by founder’s relatives
The Black Lives Matter foundation (BLM) paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to its co-founder's brother and the father of her child for security and "creative services", tax filings show. The leaders of the racial justice movement received $90 million in donations amid the 2020 protests triggered by the police murder of George Floyd. But its tax filings suggest the BLM foundation is still finding its footing and currently has no executive director or in-house staff. The organisation has come under fire after its tax filing for the last fiscal year revealed it paid huge sums to a select group of consultants which included relatives or close associates of BLM's founders. Among them was BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullor's brother, Paul Cullors, whose security firm was paid $840,000. Trap Heals LLC, a company founded by Damon Turner, who fathered a child with Ms Cullors, received almost $970,000. Meanwhile more than $2.1 million was paid to Bowers Consulting. The company's … [Read more...] about Black Lives Matter paid $1.8m to companies owned by founder’s relatives

Hope Chicago: Charity sending students from Chicago high schools to college for free
You have to admire the ambition of an inner-city high school that calls itself Johnson College Prep. Especially when a third of the students have no permanent home and many dodge violence just to get to class. But the students in this Chicago public school believe in their name. They've done the work. They've been accepted to college. Trouble is, few have the money to go. Johnson College Prep needed something like a miracle. And we were there when the miracle called Hope Chicago arrived. Johnson College Prep, on Chicago's South Side, embraces nearly 500 students. Bosnia and WW1: The living legacy of Gavrilo Princip
By Dan Damon Published 26 June 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Tourists, historians and diplomats have been arriving in Sarajevo to commemorate the shots fired by a young Bosnian Serb assassin on 28 June 1914 - shots that sparked World War One. But the city and country are uneasy in the historical spotlight, as the tensions behind those events are still alive today. Gavrilo Princip fired twice at close range into the open-topped car carrying the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie. He could hardly miss - two of the bullets found their targets and the royal couple were killed. After 37 days of increasingly paranoid diplomacy, the Great Powers went to war. The Austrians hoped this would solve the problem of Slavic separatism, and it did - but only after four years of war that destroyed their empire. With such a … [Read more...] about Bosnia and WW1: The living legacy of Gavrilo Princip
