The Bank of England has made "serious mistakes" in the fight against inflation and is facing a prolonged bout of painful price rises unless it acts immediately, its former Governor Lord King has warned. Officials at Threadneedle Street fuelled a surge in prices with a money printing spree during the Covid pandemic, the crossbench peer said. The idea that the current interest rate of 1pc, very low by historical standards, will have any significant impact when inflation is running at 7pc is "really very strange", he added. Andrew Bailey, the current Governor, is under growing political pressure for failing to prevent the crisis, and is now being scrutinised for his decision to allow staff to attend the office for just one day a week. The Bank’s long-term target is for just half the working week to be spent in the office , The Daily Mail reported. The revelation follows claims by Mr Bailey to MPs this week that he feels “helpless” to combat soaring inflation fuelled by the … [Read more...] about Bank of England has made ‘serious mistakes’, former Governor says

Brits will leave a massive online trail behind them within their lifetime

A study of 2,000 adults found more than a third (36%) of our lives are now shared online, which will be viewable - even when we're no longer here. Adults share an average of 276 posts on Instagram, 170 on Facebook and 141 tweets annually - amounting to 17,369, 10,680 and 8,911 collectively, over the average lifetime. Similarly, adults have two active email addresses for both personal, and work use, and will have signed up to over 500 mailing lists. When quizzed on the safety aspect of this, 47% do worry about the risks of putting so much of their life online - despite 29% failing to be "savvy" when it comes to protecting themselves. A spokesperson for Aloha Browser, which commissioned the study, said: "We all put so much of our lives online nowadays because it’s considered "the norm". “But we are not giving our online privacy the attention it … [Read more...] about Brits will leave a massive online trail behind them within their lifetime

NHS worker wins £1m lottery jackpot just before getting all-clear from cancer
An NHS worker has said she feels "really lucky" after winning a £1m lottery jackpot just before getting the all-clear from her breast cancer treatment. Maxine Lloyd said she was keeping an eye on her fiance, Wayne Tilbury, who had recently collapsed with a chest infection, at 1.30am when she decided to "have a flutter" on the National Lottery's £30m Mega Cash Showdown Instant Win game. The 50-year-old thought a phone notification she received during her first batch of radiography treatment was a message from her partner - but it was actually a message from her bank to say the winnings had been transferred into her account. In the space of two weeks, Mr Tilbury, a 57-year-old builder, was taken to A&E with the chest infection, Ms Lloyd rang the bell to mark the successful ending of her cancer treatment, and the couple won £1m. Afghanistan: The Taliban sniper now working behind a desk
Published 20 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing When the Taliban took power in Afghanistan last August, the lives of many residents were transformed. Over the past year, tens of thousands of Afghans have been evacuated out of the country, most girls' secondary schools have been ordered to close and poverty is rising. SHAPIRO: Debunking The Myth Of ‘Criminal Justice Reform’ | The Daily Wire
You’ve heard people on the Left say that the biggest problem in the criminal justice system in America is mass incarceration. That we have sentences that are too long. That we have sentences that are disparate. That too many people are in jail. That the police are cracking down on black and brown Americans and throwing them in jail for no reason at all, devastating inner cities. In 2020, members of both political parties gravitated toward a catch phrase encapsulating many of these ideas: Criminal justice reform. As Politico noted in April of that year, “Criminal justice reform is finally having a moment in US politics. Until recent years, candidates usually competed to look tough on crime and paint their opponents as soft. But 2020 is different.” 2020 was the year of Black Lives Matter. It was the year of Defund The Police. It was the year of ending the supposed school-to-prison pipeline. It was the year of George Floyd and Ava Duverney and Kamala Harris. It was also … [Read more...] about SHAPIRO: Debunking The Myth Of ‘Criminal Justice Reform’ | The Daily Wire
