Can the Baltic Triangle keep its cool as developers move in?
The Baltic Triangle has become Liverpool's hippest area - but how can it survive as the developers move in? In a special report, we've spoken to those who helped turn the Baltic from a backwater into a destination namechecked by the Rough Guide as "uber-arty" and described by the national media as among the coolest places in Britain. In 2004 the forgotten area was almost earmarked as a red light district. But soon, artists and creatives moved in and the area began a new lease of life. Tucked away on Jamaica Street in the Baltic Triangle is Hobo Kiosk. Many will remember it as a quirky store selling eccentric furniture and decorative pieces. But now, the historic warehouse is set to become a pub as owners Delia and Tristan convert the "cabinet of curiosities" into a place where everyone will be welcome to spin a yarn, stare in awe at the decor and share stories and music. Offering something completely different from the usual haunts of Liverpool City Centre bars and pubs, Hobo Kiosk truly represents its name as a hobo venue. Inside you'll find a light up Jesus, a juke-box and many more quirky pieces, but beneath the face of the pub, Hobo Kiosk celebrates all things local. It regularly plays host to gigs and other events. Its owners have confirmed their existing site will close later next year so the development by Legacie - which could stretch up to 18 storeys high - can begin. But they are developing another venue nearby and say they plan to open a new Constellations-style venue elsewhere. And boss Becky Wild said she was optimistic about what the future held for her business and for the Baltic Triangle. The Baltic has become one of the North's most fashionable nightlife and music destinations, but that success has also attracted developers and many new blocks of … [Read more...] about Constellations on the move as flats planned for Baltic Triangle site
