More info The Prime Minister has come under fire for not fully disclosing details of his much-vaunted renegotiation of Britain's EU membership , despite jetsetting around Europe for a series of talks in the wake of his general election victory. Instead, the Tory leader has only given a broad indication of his priorities, as well being vague on when a promised in/out referendum will take place. Mr Cameron's priorities for reform are said to mainly involve changes to the freedom of movement rules, including ensuring EU migrants are employed before entering Britain and putting a block on migrant benefits until they have been … [Read more...] about ‘What does Britain want?’ France blasts Cameron as he STILL fails to outline EU demands

Ukraine’s Long-Smoldering War for Independence
On any given night in Kiev, you can pass the time in one of the city’s popular new watering holes, descend into the basement of the old cinema to enter a Brooklyn-style speakeasy, or sip a $10 cocktail on the rooftop of a trendy music hall, where every piece of furniture in the bar appears to be up for sale. There’s an imitation Nobu , and a smattering of restaurants with names like “Reef” and “Simple” that cater to the international moneyed class. At these establishments, you’ll overhear patrons speaking in fluent English—usually Americans or Brits, likely part of the small army of Western consultants and grant-makers that have descended upon Ukraine since 2014’s Maidan Revolution and the subsequent Russian invasion. As these European spaces have sprung up, Ukraine’s old Russian place names have begun to disappear, swept away by the surge of nationalism that accompanied the events of 2014, which also paved the way for a concerted decommunization campaign to rid the nation of its … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Long-Smoldering War for Independence
The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen reveals band was ‘about to break up’ before Eurovision: ‘It saved us from destruction’
The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen has revealed the band came close to splitting up as lockdown and personal struggles drove the members apart. Lauri, Eero Heinonen, Aki Hakala and new guitarist Emilia ‘Empu’ Suhonen stormed back into the limelight this summer as they represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest with new single Jezebel. While they didn’t get the result they – or their masses of fans – were hoping for, Eurovision saw the Finnish four-piece find new admirers and regain old ones , some of whom may not have followed them since their massive 2003 hit In The Shadows . But Eurovision represented much more than that, as Lauri tells Metro.co.uk. ‘I think it was really something that saved us from destruction. It was just perfect timing for something like that,’ he says. ‘It really was important at this point, because we were really almost about to break up before all these good things started to happen. ‘Everything was so uncertain , and I … [Read more...] about The Rasmus frontman Lauri Ylonen reveals band was ‘about to break up’ before Eurovision: ‘It saved us from destruction’
My Escape From the Taliban
T he text message came a little before 5 p.m. It was August 26, 2021. Eleven days earlier, the Taliban had overthrown the Afghan government. My friend—a German writer and academic—had been trying to help my family flee the country. Now she told me she had gotten my two younger sisters and me on the list for a flight to Frankfurt, a last-minute evacuation negotiated by the German government and a nonprofit group. “What about my mom?” I asked. She didn’t reply for a moment. “I was not able to get her on this flight,” she answered. Please, I begged her: “My brothers are gone and my father is living with his second wife. She just has us, no one else, for God’s sake please do something.” But there was nothing she could do. “These are the names that they offered me,” she wrote. “I know it’s a terrible choice.” She said we had 20 minutes to decide whether to stay or go. We would need to pack, then take a taxi to a secret location, where we’d meet the buses that would drive the … [Read more...] about My Escape From the Taliban
When Russia Schemes, Moldova Suffers
In the three decades since Moldova gained its independence, Russia has spent billions, perhaps trillions, of rubles to subvert this tiny country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine. At different times, using different tactics, Russian security services have helped create and nurture pro-Russia political parties, pro-Russia media, and pro-Russia social-media campaigns in Moldova. Russian “entrepreneurs” created a web of corruption in Moldova, too, culminating in the spectacular scheme known as the Moldovan Laundromat . In that venture , a group of Moldovan banks, with the support of several senior Moldovan politicians, among others, helped launder more than $20 billion of illicit Russian money from 2010 to 2014. Whatever schemes Russia dreams up for the ex-Soviet world—corruption, subversion, or now, ominously, invasion —Moldova has usually been an early victim. Way back in the 1990s, Russia helped separatists carve out a slice of Moldova—including Tiraspol, the … [Read more...] about When Russia Schemes, Moldova Suffers
Dudes With Drones
No one knows exactly how many personal drones are buzzing through our skies, but Chris Anderson, the longtime editor of Wired magazine who now heads a drone manufacturer called 3D Robotics, estimates that at least 500,000 have been sold in the United States alone. Though drones are fun to fly, the autopilot feature on newer models frees you up to, say, cheer at your kid’s soccer game while the drone records it from the air. On the horizon is facial-recognition software that will let drone users film themselves while catching a wave on a surfboard or navigating a mountain chute on skis. And although the Federal Aviation Administration maintains that flying drones for commercial purposes won’t be legal until next year at the earliest, drones have already proved useful in agriculture, search and rescue, architecture, and other fields. According to the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, a trade group, drones could generate more than 100,000 jobs and $82 billion in … [Read more...] about Dudes With Drones
Macron says Putin using gas as ‘weapon of war’ amid rationing fears
F rench President Emmanuel Macron has accused Russia of using energy as a “weapon of war” as the chief executive of oil and gas giant Shell warned gas rationing in Europe this winter was possible. Mr Macron yesterday told citizens to "prepare for a scenario where we have to manage completely without Russian gas." "The summer, early autumn will be very hard," he said. "Russia is using energy, like it is using food, as a weapon of war." He said the government would prepare a "sobriety plan" to conserve energy, which would start with turning off public lights at night when they aren't useful. "We need a general mobilisation," Mr Macron said in a televised address for Bastille Day. Ben van Beurden, chief executive of Shell, echoed the French president’s remarks, saying Russia had shown it is “able and willing to weaponise energy supplies.” Mr van Beurden said Moscow had “surprised” the market and told governments to be prepared for the Kremlin to restrict gas further. “For a … [Read more...] about Macron says Putin using gas as ‘weapon of war’ amid rationing fears
Britain is in crisis because of the arrogance and delusions of the lockdown fanatics
What the hell did you think would happen? For the better part of two years, we paid people to stay home , and covered the cost by printing money. In other words, for two years, the amount of goods and services being produced fell, while the amount of money in circulation rose. You don’t need a degree in economics to know that more money chasing fewer products means inflation. Most of us grasp the concept of a postponed reckoning. If you took two years off work, and maintained your income by borrowing, you’d be a lot worse off. We all understand that with reference to our own lives. So why do we struggle to extend the same reasoning to our nation’s finances? Perhaps because it is human to prefer sweet falsehoods to bitter truths. It would be lovely if there really were a way to get back to growth and stable money without significant cuts. And, politics being politics, various fools and opportunists are now stepping forward to claim that this can somehow be done. First, there are … [Read more...] about Britain is in crisis because of the arrogance and delusions of the lockdown fanatics
From Kabul and beyond, a year of Taliban rule in Afghanistan
By Lyse Doucet Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing When you arrive at Kabul International Airport, the first thing you notice is the women, clothed in brown scarves and black cloaks, stamping passports. An airfield, which one year ago was the scene of a panicked tide of people desperate to escape, is now much quieter and cleaner. Rows of white Taliban flags flutter in a summer's breeze - billboards of the old famous faces have been painted over. What lies beyond this gateway to a country which was turned upside down by a swift Taliban takeover? Kabul, where women are told to give their jobs to men The messages are startling, to say the least. "They want me to give my job to my brother," writes one woman on a messaging platform. "We earned our positions with our experience and education… if we accept this it means we have betrayed … [Read more...] about From Kabul and beyond, a year of Taliban rule in Afghanistan
