NEW YORK -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning of a particularly severe season for tick-borne diseases this year, reports CBS News correspondent Anna Werner. Lindsey Mears was bitten by a tick and eventually diagnosed with Lyme disease. "It swelled up, it got really nasty and I luckily did get the classic bullseye rash around it," she said. It's the most common tick-borne disease in the country, and it's on the rise. Dr. Christopher Braden, an epidemiologist with the CDC, said that cases have tripled in the U.S. "I'm concerned about what essentially is an epidemic of Lyme disease that has occurred over the past two decades," Braden said. In 2001, there were about 17,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease, but in 2015, the number reached almost 30,000. Health officials warn those figures may vastly underestimate how widespread the disease really is, because many cases are not reported to the CDC. Ninety-five percent of Lyme disease … [Read more...] about Tick season is here: How to avoid them and prevent tick-borne illnesses

Why you should NEVER book a hotel room above the fourth floor – and avoid the ground floor too
YOU should avoid booking a hotel room above the fourth floor, a travel expert has warned - as well as any below the second floor. Lloyd Figgins , a former soldier and now travel risk expert, said the third floor is the best bet for two safety reasons. He told Sun Online Travel: "Biggest thing that is overlooked is the risk of fire." He explained: "When you arrive in a hotel, you're in an unfamiliar environment which you think is safe. The problem comes that if there were to be a fire alarm go off, what do we do next? "Do we know where the fire exit is? How are we going to get to it, and is it going to get you to safety? Is it blocked or locked?" Because of this, Lloyd says "it is always worth walking the route of the fire escape, counting the number of doors between your room and the fire escape". He added: "Make sure you are staying between the second and fourth stories of the hotel because fire department ladder rarely reach above fourth story. "Anything below … [Read more...] about Why you should NEVER book a hotel room above the fourth floor – and avoid the ground floor too

Why am I farting so much? From foods to avoid to eating too fast
Whether you call it farting , passing wind, tooting, having gas or flatulence, the release of excess air through the intestinal tract is both normal and natural. But as many may know, some days the embarrassing condition may be more prevalent than normal causing a host of problems. If it happens often, you can think of farting as a warning inside your body that means something isn't quite right. Paramedics ‘thought dying man was faking seizures to avoid being arrested’
The family of a man who died from a series of seizures after being arrested have accused medical staff of treating him like a ‘faker’. Raphael Gill, 29, had a total of six seizures and died in hospital in November 2019 after being detained for drug offences and speeding. Officers requested an ambulance ‘multiple times’ as he had the first three seizures in the back of their police car. When paramedics did arrive, Raphael, who had a history of seizures, was not medically assessed, official documents say. Once in the ambulance, he had a fourth but was only seen by doctors on the floor of A&E at Lewisham and Greenwich Hospital after his fifth. Before his sixth and final seizure, the father-of-two was recorded saying: ‘I’m going to die’ before taking his last breath. Talking to Channel 4 News , the family accused medical staff of not reacting quickly enough, saying he was ‘treated like a nobody’. They are unhappy with a specific moment in which a paramedic … [Read more...] about Paramedics ‘thought dying man was faking seizures to avoid being arrested’

Defence experts warn of ‘disaster’ for Britain after Donald Trump suggests undoing ‘out of control’ F-35 fighter jet project
British defence experts expressed alarm yesterday after Donald Trump suggested he might undo a multi-billion dollar stealth fighter project that is to form a core part of the United Kingdom's defensive capabilities. The president-elect took a casual shot at the F-35 programme for the world's most advanced fighter jet tweeting on Monday that the cost was "out of control". "Billions of dollars can and will be saved on military (and other) purchases after January 20th," he wrote, indicating a change in strategy after his inauguration. Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 6, 2016 But defence experts told this newspaper there would be disastrous consequences for Britain if Mr Trump were to put the plan on the scrap heap at this late stage. How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
An advisor to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said he doubts Russia would negotiate an end to Vladimir Putin 's invasion in good faith. In an interview with the BBC's Ukrainian service , Mykhailo Podolyak said that Moscow would use talks as an operational pause so it could make up for its shortfall in munitions and technology due to sanctions and then adjust its military strategy. "Russia is so intellectually predictable," that it would be "obvious" how any negotiations would play out, according to Podolyak. He believes that Russia would seek to start talks with a promise to temporarily stop shelling areas it is trying to seize. Moscow would then portray the administrations in place in the already captured territories as de facto Russian, and so should be recognized as "lost," a position Ukraine would refuse to accept. "Then a banal story would take place," he said, according to a translation. This would involve a ceasefire being followed by a Ukrainian … [Read more...] about How Russia-Ukraine peace talks would go, according to Zelensky’s adviser
Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution
More than 60 Oklahoma lawmakers—many of them Republicans who support the death penalty—are calling for a new evidentiary hearing in the case of Richard Glossip ahead of his upcoming execution. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals set a September 22 execution date for Glossip , 59, after a federal judge rejected a challenge to the state's lethal injection protocol. But a group of 61 Oklahoma legislators—44 Republicans and 17 Democrats—have urged Oklahoma Attorney General John O'Connor to join their request for a new hearing, citing an independent investigation by a Texas law firm that raised concerns about Glossip's guilt and conviction. "The report concluded that no reasonable juror who heard all the evidence would find Mr. Glossip guilty," the legislators wrote in a letter to O'Connor last week. "As elected officials representing the citizens of this great state, we believe it is vitally important to conduct a serious review of this case so that the truth might be … [Read more...] about Pro-death penalty legislators demand hearing on Richard Glossip’s execution
