A new lethal strain of bird flu could lead to a global pandemic, experts fear. The new pathogen, chillingly known ‘Disease X’, has been discovered in China and has a 38 per cent death rate. It is thought it could prove to be as deadly as the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed nearly 100 million people. Deputy chief medical officer for England professor Jonathan Van-Tam told The Telegraph that ‘virus H7N9’, which is currently spreading through poultry farms in China, could spark a global catastrophe. He said: "[H7N9] is an example of another virus which has proven its ability to transmit from birds to humans. "It’s possible that it could be the cause of the next pandemic." BEIJING (Reuters) – China has reported the first human case of the H7N4 strain of bird flu in a woman in an eastern coastal province, though she has since recovered. The winter is traditionally the high season for bird flu infections. In a statement late on Wednesday, the Hong Kong government’s Centre for Health Protection said it had informed of the case by mainland China’s health ministry, the National Health and Family Planning Commission. According to the commission, this was the first case of human infection with the H7N4 strain in the world, the Hong Kong government said. The case involved a 68-year-old woman in Jiangsu province who developed symptoms on Dec. 25, was admitted to hospital on Jan. 1 and discharged on Jan. 22. “She had contact with live poultry before the onset of symptoms. All her close contacts did not have any symptoms during the medical surveillance period,” the Hong Kong government said. Travellers hoping to head to China for the New Year celebrations have been given a health warning after an outbreak of bird flu. The country has been hit by human cases of the avian influenza virus known as bird flu , so travellers are being reminded of the risks of contracting the virus during their visits. Those flying out of the UK to China are advised to take extra care in order to protect themselves. The majority of reported human cases in China, have had close contact with birds and have originated from several provinces and municipalities across mainland China and Taiwan. Visitors have therefore been urged to avoid exposure to live poultry and visit medical specialists before travelling.
