Semi-automated offside technology will be used at the World Cup for the first time later this year - but football fans are not happy. Angry supporters are fed-up with constant meddling by the game's rule makers following the implementation of VAR and Arsene Wenger's proposed changes to the international match calendar. For many, the introduction of semi-automated offside technology represents the final straw. The new technology, which has already been tested at the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup and last year's FIFA Club World Cup , will see video match officials receive offside alerts, with decisions validated by humans before the match referee is informed. These are the best photos from every year of Prince Harry’s life
What a year it's been for Prince Harry. In May, he finally married Meghan Markle, and the world seems more obsessed with him than ever before. Since his big day, we've watched him attend Royal Ascot, speculated over his views on Donald Trump and guessed where the couple will go on their honeymoon. Luckily, Harry is used to life under the microscope. Ever since he was born in 1984, he and his brother William have drawn the interest of the public around the world. We got to know him through his mother's then-unheard of desire to give her sons a full range of experiences outside the royal bubble. As children, the boys were photographed at Disney World and homeless shelters alike, as part of Diana's attempt to expose them to the real world. Even after Diana's death in 1997, Harry was just as curious about exploring the world. After he finished school, he took a gap year in Australia, working as his father had done at a cattle station. He also worked with orphaned children in Lesotho. … [Read more...] about These are the best photos from every year of Prince Harry’s life
Christopher Fry
Christopher Fry, who has died, aged 97, was, with TS Eliot, the leading figure in the revival of poetic drama that took place in Britain in the late 1940s. His most popular play, The Lady's Not For Burning, ran for nine months in the West End in 1949. But although Fry was a sacrificial victim of the theatrical revolution of 1956, he bore his fall from fashion with the stoic grace of a Christian humanist and increasingly turned his attention to writing epic films, most notably Ben Hur (1959). Fry, who was born in Bristol, came to the theatre via schoolteaching. He attended Bedford modern school, acted briefly in Bath, then taught at the Bedford Froebel kindergarten and at a preparatory school in Limpsfield, Surrey, before chucking it up to found the Tunbridge Wells Repertory Players in 1932. He ran the company for three years, directing the English premiere of Shaw's Village Wooing. He went on to write lyrics and music - including a song called I'll Snatch The Man From The Moon … [Read more...] about Christopher Fry

Nature in crisis: How can we prevent biodiversity loss?
The world is currently witnessing biodiversity loss at a rate and scale unprecedented in human history. Over 1 million species are at risk of extinction. Many are disappearing before we have had a chance to discover them. Climate change, pollution and disappearing habitats are among the forces that have pushed nature toward a cliff edge. The situation is so severe that scientists say we are facing the " sixth mass die-off " — the scale of which has not been seen since the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago. Yet 2022 presents a window of opportunity, with the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in Canada set to bring together world leaders to discuss a road map to deal with the crisis in nature. In our latest Global Ideas web special we take a deep dive into why protecting biodiversity is so critical, and what the concrete and effective solutions are to tackling the problem. Meghan Markle and the modern royal mini dress
Since marrying Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle has carefully curated her own style with a sense of aesthetic independence not usually associated with members of the royal family. Fiercely proud of the fact that she doesn't use the services of a stylist , Meghan has moved away from many established royal conventions both in her wardrobe choices and her working practices. From commissioning a French fashion brand to make her wedding dress to stepping out at royal functions in bold and exciting colors, Meghan has a strong connection with how she dresses. One fashion staple in the duchess' wardrobe that she is particularly fond of is the mini-dress. This 1960s invention has been reinterpreted over subsequent decades into a chic wardrobe essential. For the royals though, the mini dress or skirt is a rarely worn item. In the 1960s, the two leading royal followers of fashion did adopt the miniskirt, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret. Others, including the queen, have … [Read more...] about Meghan Markle and the modern royal mini dress
