Last month, Prime Minister David Cameron said some children were "having their heads filled with poison and their hearts filled with hate" in these Muslim supplementary schools. Muslim organisations accept regulation is needed to protect children's welfare but maintain concerns about radicalisation are misplaced. The UK contains about 2,000 madrassas. Religious instruction Under the plans, any out-of-school setting providing intensive education would be required to register and be open to inspection. This is likely to cover almost all madrassas, as the proposals suggest six to eight hours a week as the threshold for regulation. Australia election: Anthony Albanese leads Labor to Australian election victory
By Tiffanie Turnbull Published 21 May Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Australia election 2022 Anthony Albanese is set to become Australia's next prime minister after leading the Labor Party to its first election victory in more than a decade. One of the country's longest-serving politicians, he promised voters "safe change" as he worked to kick out the conservative Liberal-National coalition which has been in power since 2013. Where ousted Prime Minister Scott Morrison is a self-described "bulldozer", Mr Albanese vows to be a "builder". After the pandemic, which saw Australian states cut off from each other and cities splintered by strict lockdowns, fostering unity is a top priority for the new leader. "I want to bring Australians together. I want to seek our common purpose and promote unity and optimism, not fear and division," he said … [Read more...] about Australia election: Anthony Albanese leads Labor to Australian election victory

Phillip Rhodes returns to Aotearoa for star role in Wellington Opera’s La Traviata
Phillip Rhodes (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Kahungunu) is a husband and father of two. He grew up in Hawke’s Bay and was fostered by Henare and Pam O'Keefe. He left Aotearoa to study singing in Cardiff, after winning the Lexus Song Quest in 2007. With support from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s foundation, he managed to establish himself as a professional singer in Europe with regular appearances in the UK's leading opera companies, including Opera North, Scottish Opera, Welsh National, English National and the Royal Opera House. He’s now come back home for Wellington Opera’s La Traviata, which shows from July 9-16 at the St James Theatre. What is the show you’re involved with? I will be singing the role of Giorgio Germont. Giorgio is a man of his time, a father who loves his son, and dotes on his (betrothed) daughter. He is a father who, like many, is willing to walk into hell in order to save his children. But in order to rescue his daughter's marriage he demands the termination of his son's … [Read more...] about Phillip Rhodes returns to Aotearoa for star role in Wellington Opera’s La Traviata
Meet Lauren Hemp: England’s breakout star poised to light up this summer’s home Euros
Lauren Hemp has a problem. And, given she is tipped to become one of the breakout stars of England’s European Championship campaign , it is only going to get worse. While on the pitch Hemp plays football with a freedom and confidence that electrifies even the dullest of games , you would have no idea that, inside, she is instinctively shy and reserved. But if there is one aspect the 21-year-old has struggled with in her career, it is the idea that she is a celebrity. Hemp habitually shuns the limelight. She doesn't like being spotted, and values the relative anonymity living in a big city like Manchester gives her. “I don’t really enjoy that side of things,” she admits to Telegraph Sport. “Like when I’m playing, that’s fine, but off [the pitch]… It’s something I guess we are going to have to get used to it - try to embrace it. I’m definitely far more comfortable being spotted in my football kit than in a tracksuit going to the cinema with my friends.” So when Hemp was … [Read more...] about Meet Lauren Hemp: England’s breakout star poised to light up this summer’s home Euros
Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’
Sitting down for a chat in the peaceful surrounding of FC Basel's sun-soaked training ground, England midfielder Keira Walsh's calm demeanour epitomises the tranquility of the rolling, green hills in the distance behind her as well as the atmosphere in the whole Lionesses' squad. And it's because one word appropriately sums up the feeling in the group: relaxed. Not the sort of relaxation that resembles a holiday, nor complacency - on the contrary, the intense focus to training is clear to see too - but the kind that oozes from a group that evidently know that, whatever challenges might come their way in the upcoming Euros, their head coach has given them the confidence and the tools to find on-pitch solutions. This has been evident in England's three victories in June's warm-up games - all of which were still level at half-time - as their strength in depth helped them to eventually coast to 3-0 , 5-1 and 4-0 victories. Yet arguably the pressure on this squad to deliver has … [Read more...] about Keira Walsh: ‘The mentality now is all about the team winning, rather than individuals’
