China: Buyout of UK’s largest microchip plant raises concerns

July 4, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Gordon Corera Published 16 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Entering Newport's fabrication plant is an other-worldly experience. Gloves, a white suit and hood need to be put on in the right order before stepping into a chamber where jets of air blast away remaining contaminants. The process, a guide explains, is not to protect people, but the product. On the other side of the secure door, lies the UK's largest semi-conductor manufacturing facility, an environment one hundred times cleaner than a hospital operating theatre. October 15, 2020 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 15 October 2020 comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Nicola Sturgeon has warned that Scotland will not return to normal when the current restrictions on pubs and restaurants expire later this month. Licensed premises across the central belt were temporarily closed last week, with tough restrictions placed on those elsewhere in the country. The rules are due to expire on 26 October - but Ms Sturgeon said this would not signal a return to normality. The ban on visiting other people's homes will also remain in place. And the Scottish government is to introduce a multi-tier system of alert levels similar to that now in force in England, which could potentially see venues in areas with coronavirus outbreaks remain closed. T he American owners of Boots may revive plans for stock market float next year after scrapping the sale of Britain’s biggest chemist to a Wall Street buyout fund and Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Walgreens, which merged with Boots in 2014 in a deal worth £9bn, said none of the offers for the “adequately reflects the high potential value of Boots and No7 Beauty Company”. The Illinois-headquartered company said bidders had struggled to arrange bank loans to buy Boots after financial markets “suffered unexpected and dramatic change”. Private equity fund Apollo and Mr Ambani had been in pole position to acquire Boots after Walgreens chairman Stefano Pessina put the business up for sale in January. But a £5bn approach — considerably lower than the £7bn Mr Pessina is said to have wanted — fell through. Ornella Barra, Boots operating chief, wrote to the company’s 56,000 staff saying she was “happy to confirm that it has been decided that Boots and No7 Beauty Company will … [Read more...] about Boots stock market float back on the table as £5bn sale collapses

May 8, 2021 by metro.co.uk

Summer is around the corner and with the hot weather comes the reality of a sweatier, oilier face. So our makeup tends to get lighter in consistency, with foundations swapped out for skin tints and heavy powders ditched. Makeup in sheer or balmy textures becomes a blessing. While it’s not the most mask transfer-proof finish, a sheer texture is quick and easy to top up. Usually only a quick blend with the pad of a finger (over a brush and sponge) is all you need. Dominic Skinner, global senior artist at MAC Cosmetics tells Metro.co.uk these textures also allow you to experiment with playful colours in a failsafe way. Using blusher as an example, he says: ‘Bold looks always find a way to filter to the high street. ‘So a bold, yet sheer, pop of blush has its origins in fashion week but made more wearable.’ So as well as being quicker to apply and less heavy on the skin, you can afford to go brighter or more statement than you normally would, in the knowledge … [Read more...] about For easy summer makeup, sheer and balmy textures are the way to go – here are our top buys
