What makes a perfect water bottle for a kid to take to school? According to my 9-year-old daughter, it's a central handle, a decent water capacity and a cap that's easy to secure and drink from. So we set out to find a good one. There are plenty of water bottles targeted at kids, but most of them are too small and require refilling too often. She was looking for one in the 16- to 18-ounce range to replace a broken Kinto Day Off Tumbler she had been using for most of the school year. She especially liked the Day Off's handle placement and its easy-to-use cap. The water bottles we researched are general purpose ones that should work for both kids in elementary school or adults commuting to work. Each of them is double walled and vacuum insulated to keep water cold inside and avoid exterior sweating. To put these bottles to the test, my daughter took each one to school multiple times and kept notes about the aspects she liked and didn't like, along with any surprises she encountered … [Read more...] about Buying a school water bottle with help from a 9 year old

US finds 500 Native American boarding school deaths so far
A first-of-its-kind national study of US Native American boarding schools that for over a century sought to assimilate Indigenous children into white society has identified more than 500 student deaths at the institutions, but officials expect that figure to grow exponentially as research continues. The Interior Department report released on Wednesday (local time) expands to more than 400 the number of schools that were established or supported by the US government, starting in the early 19th century and continuing in some cases until the late 1960s. The agency identified the deaths in records for about 20 of the schools . The dark history of Native American boarding schools – where children were forced from their families, prohibited from speaking their languages and often abused – has been felt deeply across Indian Country and through generations. Many children never returned home, and the Interior Department said that with further investigation the number of known student … [Read more...] about US finds 500 Native American boarding school deaths so far

Let’s talk about sex, habibi!
Traditionally, in most Middle Eastern countries, "it" is expected to happen on the wedding night for the first time. "But for most women, this is also the first time they are naked in front of anyone and the first time they see a penis in real life," Nour Emam, who runs Arab-English sex education courses, told DW. One doesn't have to be a psychologist to see that this could be more conducive to disaster than to romance and intimacy. For this reason, one of Emam's online courses is aimed at women who are about to get married. "We kind of walk them through the bodies and genitals and encourage them to talk to their partners before they tie the knot," Emam explained. She believes it is crucial to address the expectations of both partners. "For years and years, young girls are told that sex is something dirty, so they are scared and possibly not ready for penetration on their wedding night," Emam said. But "on the other hand, many men can't wait to live out all their teenage porn … [Read more...] about Let’s talk about sex, habibi!

How Channel 4 lost its way
For two decades, Channel 4 was the most exciting thing on British TV. Launched under Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government 40 years ago as a commercially-funded, publicly-owned alternative to the BBC, it introduced us to Football Italia, gave us such pioneering, unique dramas such as GBH, and, with Brookside, redefined the soap opera. In many ways, the channel was the perfect British TV station: it combined shopkeeper entrepreneurialism and a fondness for the arts with some slightly risqué pranks. It saved, and then rebuilt, the British film industry. It launched the careers of hundreds of writers, comedians, musicians and presenters. It made the Paralympics into a prime-time hit, attracting close to 30 million viewers for Tokyo 2020. There was game show Countdown, the first programme broadcast on the channel’s launch in 1982; Desmond’s, one of the country’s first black sitcoms; The Comic Strip Presents…, which introduced alternative comedy to a wide audience; live coverage … [Read more...] about How Channel 4 lost its way
Netflix to be judged by Ofcom over controversial shows
Netflix and other streaming behemoths will face judgment over controversial shows from Britain's broadcasting watchdog for the first time under sweeping proposals put forward by the Government. Nadine Dorries, the Culture Secretary, will on Thursday seek to level the playing field between internet services and traditional broadcasters such as the BBC by bringing them under the supervision of Ofcom. In a white paper, she will also set out plans to update public service broadcasting rules with a reduced focus on programmes about gardening and cookery, ensure sporting events such as the Olympics can be watched for free on catch-up services, and privatise Channel 4 by the end of next year . The move came despite a backlash from some Tory MPs on Wednesday, who questioned whether pressing ahead with a sale of Channel 4 was “a game worth the candle”. But Ms Dorries insists the package of measures will ensure that Britain’s public broadcasters are fit for the future and trigger a … [Read more...] about Netflix to be judged by Ofcom over controversial shows
Inside UFO secrets that could be revealed at bombshell hearing probing whether aliens pose national security threat
CONCERNS that UFOs have never-before-seen capabilities that can outmaneuver and outperform the US's most advanced military technology prompted Congress to call a historic UFO hearing. Congressman Andre Carson, who will head the May 17 public hearing, promised to dive into the national security risks posed by UFOs' potential presence. "Americans need to know more about these unexplained occurrences," Carson said in a tweet. This is the first time Congress will get together in more than 50 years to discuss UFOs and extraterrestrial life, which expert Jeremy Corbell said is a "big f******g deal." "This is what the people and #UFOTwitter have been asking for: uniform transparency," Corbell told The Sun in an exclusive interview. "This hearing will kick in the doors and is more proof that UFOs are real and prove that they have advanced tech that we cannot identify. North Korea COVID admission reveals ‘serious health situation’
More than two years after the coronavirus pandemic began to spread across the world, North Korea confirmed on Thursday the first case of the illness within its borders . By Friday morning, the government in Pyongyang had admitted six deaths , was treating 18,000 people with fevers and had placed nearly 190,000 more in isolation. The stark admission that the authorities are struggling to contain the problem is a remarkable about-face for a country that has previously boasted that its policy of sealing the borders in the early months of the pandemic had been successful in keeping the virus at bay. Few virologists believed the claim at the time but international health and aid organizations were initially restricted to Pyongyang before eventually being ordered to leave the country. Earlier reports of virus Dissident media have periodically reported claims that an unidentified illness was running rampant through a society with extremely limited public health capabilities and … [Read more...] about North Korea COVID admission reveals ‘serious health situation’
