• Photos and words courtesy of Stewart Wall Caistor’s classic car meeting took on a glamorous air as one of the town’s newest businesses joined in the fun. Gillian Austin, owner of Bridal Reloved in South Street, brought a number of town businesses and the community event together when she asked two local ladies to dress up for the day and take a photo walk around the town with professional photographer Stewart Wall. The day for the ‘brides’ – Christina Clarke and Laura Dora Howe – began at Skin Couture , where salon owner Gillian Jackson and hairdresser Nicki Chaplin prepared them for their starring roles. Then it was off to have their dresses fitted and out into the town. They stopped of for a bit of square dancing in George’s Yard before arriving in the market place, where the classic car event was well underway. ANOTHER year has drawn to a close and although we may have our own memories of what happened in 2008, chances are we'll be able to remember more of what happened years ago than what happened yesterday. The year I remember most was 1958 because that was the year I started working at the Reporter, a life changing event if ever there was one.Dewsbury was very much different in those days, especially in the town centre where there were five cinemas – the Playhouse, Tudor, Pioneers, Essoldo and Rex – and there was also the Collins in Batley Carr, and the Pavillion in Ravensthorpe. The Empire Theatre had just closed down, but the building remained, and there were some people who believed it would re-open again. But it didn't.Caddy's ice cream parlour was still doing a brisk trade, and it was to be some years before this historic building went the same way as the Empire. One big story in 1958 was the council's decision to ban jiving and jitterbugging at town hall dances, but … [Read more...] about No jive

Rick Jervis USA TODAY Published 6:48 PM EDT Apr 23, 2019 AUSTIN – Sometime after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Clara Byrd Taylor will step into a viewing room next to the death chamber at the Huntsville Unit prison in East Texas and watch a man die. She won’t relish witnessing John William King, 44, succumb to a cocktail of injected lethal fluids but said it’s a necessary step in the long saga of her brother’s murder. King and two other accomplices were convicted in the murder of Taylor’s brother, James Byrd, Jr., two decades ago in Jasper, Texas. “It’s a very, very sad time,” Taylor, 71, said. “You don’t feel any satisfaction in observing this but it is absolutely necessary to send a message: Hate crimes – especially this type of savagery – will not be tolerated in our society.” King is scheduled to die on Wednesday for the 1998 death of Byrd. In the early morning hours of June 7, 1998, King and two other … [Read more...] about James Byrd Jr., was tied to the back of a pickup truck and dragged for three miles.
