The spread of the livestream video of yesterday’s mass shooting in Buffalo, New York was “not even comparable” to the reach of the livestream posted by the March 15 terrorist in 2019. Anjum Rahman, who is co-chair of the Christchurch Call advisory network, said the spread of the content related to the Buffalo attack was “certainly better” than the March 15 video which was seen four million times in the hours it took to remove it. There were interactions on Facebook and Twitter alone in the thousands, which was “not even comparable” to the Christchurch attack material viewings. Monday morning news briefing: PM attacks EU on cost of living
After weeks of speculation, Boris Johnson is preparing to approve a law scrapping key parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol. One of the Prime Minister's key arguments is that the agreement is holding back Westminster from helping with the cost of living crisis . Mr Johnson will travel to Belfast today for talks with political leaders and is expected to sign off plans later this week for domestic legislation giving the Government the right to suspend elements of the Brexit deal. In an article ahead of his visit, he argues that the Protocol is "restricting" his ability to help with the province's "post-Covid recovery" and holding back growth. He notes that a UK-wide VAT cut on renewable energy products cannot be implemented in Northern Ireland due to the Protocol. Political editor Ben Riley-Smith says the move comes despite warnings it could collapse talks and cause a trade war with the EU . Meanwhile, Andrew Griffith, director of the No 10 Policy Unit, today argues … [Read more...] about Monday morning news briefing: PM attacks EU on cost of living

Police failed to warn German politician over far-right threat: report
Police in the German capital Berlin allegedly failed to inform a left-wing politician he was still being spied upon by the far-right NSU 2.0 terrorist group, public broadcaster RBB and the Berliner Morgenpost reported Friday. Ferat Kocak, a lawmaker from the socialist Left party in Berlin's state parliament, was left in the dark about the new threat, despite an arson attack on his car and family home months earlier. NSU is short for the National Socialist Underground , whose members murdered at least ten people between 2000 and 2007. A key member of the group Beate Zschäpe was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2018. NSU 2.0 is an apparent new incarnation of the group, that has made threats against scores of German officials over the past three years. What are the new allegations? In March 2019, Berlin's Criminal Investigation Department (LKA) received an anonymous email from someone claiming to represent NSU 2.0. How ‘replacement theory’ became prominent in mainstream US politics
The 18-year-old suspect who allegedly shot and killed 10 people at a supermarket on Saturday in the heart of a Black community in Buffalo appears to have been motivated by a racist, far-right conspiracy theory that has increasingly found footing in mainstream U.S. politics. Before traveling more than three hours from Conklin, New York, to the Tops Friendly Market to attack Black people, the alleged gunman, Payton S. Gendron, is believed to have posted a 180-page document on the internet fixated on the notion of "replacement theory," according to authorities. "Great Replacement theory is the notion that people from minority populations, both here and in Europe, are replacing the existing white, largely Christian [population]," said Larry Rosenthal, chair and lead researcher of the Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies. Buffalo and us – New Zealand’s significance in global white supremacy
STUFF Jacinda Ardern speaks ahead of the release of the royal commission of inquiry's report on the March 15, 2019, terror attack. (Video first published December 2020.) Paul Spoonley is a d istinguished professor emeritus at Massey University whose research interests have included extensive study of the far-Right, white supremacism and anti-Semitism. OPINION: The headline from the New York Daily News on May 15 was “Buffalo shooter was radicalized by New Zealand mosque shooter”. The report went on to point to the role of online radical white supremacist (and anti-Semitic) sites in the radicalisation of the shooter – and the particular influence of the Christchurch terrorist. Both aspects are explicitly acknowledged by the Buffalo shooter in an online document. It confirms – yet again – the significance of online platforms and activism in perpetuating an international extremist ecosystem, along with the significance of the Christchurch shootings as an … [Read more...] about Buffalo and us – New Zealand’s significance in global white supremacy
Tucker Carlson explains “race politics” not behind “crazy” Buffalo shooter
Tucker Carlson says the gunman who shot 10 Black people in Buffalo over the weekend was "crazy" and is being used by Democrats to disparage conservatives. The Fox News personality made the comments during his program Monday, saying the suspected shooter's "manifesto" amounted to deranged ramblings and were not a political statement. Police have described the mass shooting as an act of "racially motivated violent extremism" that left 10 people dead. Before being taken into custody by police, the suspected shooter left behind a trail of racist social media posts. He also reportedly authored a manifesto saying the attack was motivated by the "Great Replacement Theory," a racist conspiracy theory that claims elites are seeking to replace white people with people of color. The theory has motivated four mass shootings . "I want to be clear, for my part, from everything we know, this was a targeted attack, a hate crime, and an act of racially motivated violent extremism," FBI … [Read more...] about Tucker Carlson explains “race politics” not behind “crazy” Buffalo shooter
