Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have a stranglehold on men’s tennis. It’s not the first time the two greats of the game have combined to monopolise the grand slams, but with those two legends aged 36 and 32 respectively some might have expected their superpowers to be on the wane. They’re not. Federer and Nadal have shared the last six Majors to take their personal tally up to 20 and 17 titles each. The two sit at the top of the pile, clear of Pete Sampras in third and with a healthy buffer to Novak Djokovic on 12. Since Stan Wawrinka won the 2016 US Open nobody has been able to upset the apple cart. Roger Federer has on Monday returned to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings for the 309th week of his career, after Rafael Nadal was beaten in last week's Mutua Madrid Open quarter-finals. The Swiss begins his fifth stint at the summit of men's professional tennis at the age of 36 years, nine months. Federer first became No. 1 at the age of 22 on 2 February 2004, spending 237 consecutive weeks there until 17 August 2008. He returned to the top spot for 48 weeks from 6 July 2009 to 6 June 2010, then 17 weeks between 9 July 2012 and 4 November 2012 and most recently from 19 February this year, for six weeks. Federer, who is scheduled to return at the MercedesCup in June, has compiled a 17-2 record on the 2018 season with trophies at the Australian Open (d. By Simon cambers MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Grigor Dimitrov and Alexander Zverev, two men who made perhaps the biggest steps forward in 2017, believe they are ready to contend for the title at the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Monday. Dimitrov starts the year ranked third, having won his biggest title in November when he triumphed at the ATP Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London. Germany’s Zverev won five titles in 2017, including two Masters 1000 titles, finishing the year just behind Dimitrov as the world number four. Besides world number one Rafael Nadal and defending champion Roger Federer, Dimitrov and Zverev are considered genuine title threats.
