Monte Carlo (Principality of Monaco) (AFP) - Rafael Nadal said on Sunday that he is fit and ready to defend his Monte Carlo Masters title and the number-one ranking this week, as he returns to the ATP Tour after injury. The 31-year-old made his comeback from a hip injury with two wins in Spain's Davis Cup quarter-final victory over Germany last weekend, having not played previously since January's Australian Open. Nadal was forced to retire from his last-eight clash with Marin Cilic in Melbourne, but recently usurped Roger Federer at the top of the world rankings after his great rival's early exit in Miami. "I feel that I'm playing well. I had some good days of practice here, playing some good sets," Nadal said ahead of the start of the claycourt season. "That helps me. I love this event. I always feel comfortable here. "I'm enjoying being here in Monte Carlo in an event that always brings me to the best feelings possible. "It's hopefully going to be my first event of the year that I … [Read more...] about Nadal ready for ATP Tour return in Monte Carlo title defence
Roger Federer has become the oldest world number one in tennis history after coming from behind to beat Robin Haase at the Rotterdam Open. The 36-year-old replaces Rafael Nadal to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time since October 2012 and eclipses Andre Agassi as the most senior player to reach the summit of the sport. Haase initially appeared to have miss-read the script by taking the opening set but the 20-time grand slam winner ratcheted up the pressure to take the next two to prevail 4-6 6-1 6-1, with the Dutchman clearly struggling with injury and illness. He will face either Andreas Seppi or Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final on Saturday [16 February] as he pursues his second title of a year in which he has already won a sixth Australian Open. "What an amazing run it has been," the noticeably emotional Swiss said. "To clinch world number one again really means a lot to me. "Reaching world number one is the ultimate achievement in our sport. Sometimes you're trying to … [Read more...] about Roger Federer becomes oldest world number one ever and replaces Rafael Nadal after Rotterdam win
(Reuters) – Roger Federer is one win from becoming the oldest world number one in ATP Tour history after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(8) 7-5 in the last 16 of the Rotterdam Open on Thursday. The 36-year-old needs to reach the semi-finals to overtake Rafael Nadal at the top of the rankings and reclaim the world number one ranking for the first time since November 2012. Kohlschreiber, 34, had not beaten Federer in 12 attempts but on his own service game proved a tough opponent for the Swiss, pushing him all the way to a first set tiebreak. The German even had two set points but could not convert them as Federer rallied and placed a forehand perfectly beyond Kohlschreiber to take the lead in the match after 54 minutes. The second set followed a similar pattern but with Kohlschreiber, ranked 36 in the world, more attuned to Federer’s serve and improving his return rate. He still had to save four break points without getting close himself to threatening the Australian Open … [Read more...] about Federer closes in on world number one ranking
