Croatian police are returning groups of asylum seekers across the EU’s external border with Bosnia, a video obtained by the Guardian suggests, in an apparent breach of EU law. Footage shared by the watchdog organisation Border Violence Monitoring (BVM) shows a number of alleged collective expulsions or “pushbacks” of migrants at a forest near Lohovo, in Bosnian territory. The videos, filmed on hidden cameras between 29 September and 10 October, capture 54 incidents of people being pushed back in groups from Croatia into Bosnia with 368 people in total returned, according to the footage. Bosnia-Herzegovina’s security minister, Dragan Mektić, told the news channel N1 the behaviour of the Croatian police was “a disgrace for an EU country”. The footage, received by BVM from informants who prefer to remain anonymous, shows people lining up and walking through the forest, escorted by Croatian officers. Every night, people from Syria, Iraq, … [Read more...] about Croatia violating EU law by sending back asylum seekers to Bosnia

Decrease in crime in area around Derby asylum seeker centre
When it was revealed Derby's Laverstoke Court would be opening its doors to up to 225 asylum seekers back in January this year, there were negative reactions from some in the area. Hundreds of residents wrote in to the council to object to the planning application, with a petition gathering over 200 signatures. And many of those were concerned that crime levels could go up as a result. But latest statistics show this does not appear to have been the case - with the crime rate in the area around Laverstoke Court, Peet Street, in fact having decreased. And there are mixed views from people in the area about whether the asylum seekers arrival in the area has been positive or negative. ConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightHotel Limbo: how Ireland institutionalises asylum seekers
In direct provision centres in Ireland, refugees live on €21.60 (approximately £19) a week. “We don’t buy outside [of the centre],” says a mother in Mosney Accommodation Centre. “You can’t afford to”. Established in 1999, the Irish programme of direct provision is supposed to be a short-term solution for asylum seekers. They are housed and provided for in camps, old holiday parks and hotels, all owned or managed by contractors for the Irish state. Families are kept here while awaiting the outcome of their asylum applications. In theory, residents are not supposed to be here for more than six months. In reality, 55 per cent of those in direct provision have been there for five years or longer. Residents must sign in and out of direct provision centres if they choose to leave for a day. In a 2014 case taken to the Irish High Court by a Ugandan asylum seeker mother, it was revealed that at the Eglinton Hotel in Galway, residents … [Read more...] about ConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightConsumerBusinessSpotlightHotel Limbo: how Ireland institutionalises asylum seekers
