President Donald Trump's son Eric Trump turns 34 years old Saturday, as the White House struggles to deal with a Russia probe and new tell-all book by Michael Wolff. In the book, In Fire and Fury , Wolff was not terribly kind to Eric. "Donald Trump's sons, Don Jr. thirty-nine, and Eric, thirty-three, existed in an enforced infantile relationship to their father, a role that embarrassed them, but one that they also professionally embraced," Wolff wrote. "The role was to be Donald Trump's heirs and attendees. Their father took some regular pleasure in pointing out that they were in the back of the room when God handed out brains." Eric echoed this himself, when he told the New York Magazine that his brother Don Jr. and sister Ivanka were the real parents to him. "[Ivanka] took me under her wing and raised me, took me shopping, tried to make me cool," he said. And Eric isn't being let out of the Russia talk either. In November, a member of the House Intelligence Committee … [Read more...] about Eric Trump celebrates birthday as White House erupts over Russia probe, new book

Inside the villages suffering Russia’s retaliation as Ukraine counterstrikes with U.S. heavy weapons
Near Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine — A massive series of explosions earlier this week at an airbase on Crimea sent shockwaves far beyond the Russian-occupied peninsula off Ukraine 's southern Black Sea coast. New satellite images appear to show deep craters and scorched earth, and the Ukrainian government claims its forces destroyed at least nine Russian warplanes in a strike. The huge blasts sent stunned beachgoers, who were relaxing well over 100 miles from the nearest front line in the war, running for safety. It was a "deep strike" behind Russia's lines for the Ukrainian forces, retired U.S. Marine Corps intelligence officer Hal Kempfer told CBS News. "Frankly, that changes the front across the board," he told CBS News senior foreign correspondent Charlie D'Agata. "If they can continue the momentum, if they can continue to do deep strikes, if they continue to make gains across the Kherson Oblast, they might be able to push all the way across that southern flank." Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’
Latvia MPs have officially declared Russia a "state sponsor of terrorism" amid the war in Ukraine. The parliament declared its neighbour's actions amount to "genocide against the Ukrainian people", according to a statement published on Thursday. MPs also called on other European countries to "express the same opinion". Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said he was "grateful" for the announcement and that the declaration was "timely". Russia "uses suffering and intimidation as tools in its attempts to weaken the morale of the Ukrainian people and armed forces, and to paralyse the functioning of the state in order to occupy Ukraine," the parliament statement said. The text was supported by all 67 lawmakers who took part in the vote in the 100-seat Saeima. MPs have also accused Moscow of deploying internationally banned munitions "to spread fear and kill civilians". The European Union member state stressed that Russia's invasion was carried out "with … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Latvia MPs declare Russia a ‘state sponsor of terrorism’

Published 31 March 2018 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Russia has told Britain a total of more than 50 of its diplomats will have to leave, amid a deepening row over the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the UK. Moscow initially expelled 23 British diplomats after 23 Russian diplomats were ordered out by London. But now the Russians are insisting that even more UK diplomats should leave. It says the UK and Russian diplomatic missions should be the same size in each country. In practice that would mean at least another 27 UK officials being sent home, the BBC's Paul Adams reports from Moscow. U.S. air division sent to Europe after Kremlin says Russia, NATO at war
A U.S. air assault division is being sent to Europe to help protect NATO 's eastern flank in a move that follows a top Kremlin official saying that Russia has been fighting a war with the military alliance on Ukrainian soil. The deployment of the 101st Airborne Division, which is nicknamed the "Screaming Eagles," was announced Thursday by the U.S. Mission to NATO. It said that nearly 2,400 soldiers would be sent to NATO members Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia to "reassure our Allies, and deter our adversaries." The day before, Sergey Kiriyenko, the first deputy chief of the Russian presidential staff, alleged that the West was conducting a "hot military operation" against Russia in Ukraine. "We understand very well that on the territory of Ukraine we are not at war with Ukraine and, of course, not with Ukrainians," Russian state-owned news agency Tass quoted him as saying. "The entire NATO bloc is fighting a war against Russia, on the territory of Ukraine and by the … [Read more...] about U.S. air division sent to Europe after Kremlin says Russia, NATO at war
McDonald’s to reopen in Ukraine as war with Russia rages on
McDonald's will start reopening some of its restaurants in Ukraine in the coming months, a symbol of the war-torn country's return to some sense of normalcy and a show of support after the American fast-food chain pulled out of Russia . The burger giant closed its Ukrainian restaurants after Russia's invasion nearly six months ago but has continued to pay more than 10,000 McDonald's employees in the country. McDonald's said Thursday that it will begin gradually reopening some restaurants in the capital, Kyiv, and western Ukraine, where other companies are doing business away from the fighting. Western businesses like Nike, KFC and Spanish clothing retailer Mango are open in Kyiv. "We've spoken extensively to our employees who have expressed a strong desire to return to work and see our restaurants in Ukraine reopen," Paul Pomroy, corporate senior vice president of international operated markets, said in a message to employees. Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion
As Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine staggers through its sixth month , the risk of a catastrophic nuclear war between Russia and NATO grows with each bloody day. That might come as a surprise to Americans, for whom the conflict is now mostly an abstraction. But unless Russian and Ukrainian leaders can find an off-ramp for this destructive conflict, the tiny but real chance of Armageddon will compound like interest on a loan. There are multiple red flags suggesting that we are in more danger than we realize—much more so than when the invasion began. Russia is using Europe's largest nuclear plant, Zaporizhzhia, as a shield to launch artillery attacks, a situation ripe for catastrophe. How would Western countries react to a meltdown triggered by Russian malfeasance, or one caused by an errant Ukrainian air or drone strike? What if Russia triggered a Chernobyl-style disaster and attempted to pin the blame on someone else as a pretext for nuclear escalation? Russian President … [Read more...] about Our attention has waned, Russia’s nuclear threat hasn’t | Opinion
