Ben Stokes's international career will be placed in suspended animation when the England cricketer appears in a Bristol court on Monday charged with affray. While England have had to make do without the talented all-rounder before, either through injury or their own policy decisions, both he and they are now beholden to the outcome of a looming trial. His upcoming court appearance -- which is expected to last at least five days -- saw Stokes omitted from England's squad for the second Test against India at Lord's starting on Thursday. Stokes, 27, served notice of just what Joe Root's men will be missing when, in typical fashion, he seized the initiative to bowl England to a 31-run victory in the first Test at Edgbaston on Saturday. The lively paceman and hard-hitting batsman was centre stage when taking two wickets in an over, including the prize scalp of India captain and star batsman Virat Kohli, as England took charge decisively of what had been a see-saw contest. Stokes, also a … [Read more...] about Court case puts Stokes’s England career on hold

Root was run out for 80 by his opposite number Virat Kohli at Edgbaston, meaning he has now not converted any of his last 11 Test half-centuries into a hundred. That record extends to two hundreds out of 16 50 or higher scores since taking the captaincy, in which time several England batsmen have suffered the same issue. Struggle for centuries In 17 Tests under Root since July 2017, England players have collectively posted 61 scores of 50 or more – but only nine centuries. Root himself is the headline act but Dawid Malan, whose place in the middle order has been the subject of speculation, has converted only once in seven attempts. Axed opener Mark Stoneman managed five half-centuries … [Read more...] about Joe’s conversion problem taking Root in England ranks?
Sport by Press Association June 23, 2018, 11:54 am FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Sport newsletter England need just one more victory at Old Trafford on Sunday to complete an unprecedented 5-0 one-day international whitewash of Australia. Here, Press Association Sport identifies the key factors at play for the series finale. Verge of history Few with even just a passing interest will be unaware that one more win this weekend will complete a first-ever 5-0 ODI scoreline in England’s favour over Australia. In fact, the whitewash statistic reaches significantly further. Unlike Australia, England have never managed the feat in Test cricket either – Mike Brearley’s 1978/79 tourists came closest to an Ashes clean sweep but had to settle for a mere 5-1 in a six-match series against hosts severely depleted during the era of Kerry Packer’s World Series. England did beat Australia 4-0 in ODIs only six years ago, an Edgbaston … [Read more...] about The major talking points as England aim to make history in Manchester
England’s limited-overs schedule this summer will truly kick into gear with a one-day international series against Australia. Eoin Morgan’s side will play five matches in the space of 15 days against the tourists, who are back in action for the first time since the calamitous tour of South Africa earlier this year. Here, Press Association Sport looks at five talking points ahead of cricket’s oldest rivals going head to head. Strong and stable England arguably plumbed new depths at the last World Cup when they exited in the group stages with barely a whimper. Their subsequent transformation has been nothing short of remarkable and six series wins on the spin have taken them to the top of the ODI rankings. While there are plenty of vacancies in the Test team, England’s 50-over side almost chooses itself with only one or two spaces possibly up for grabs. A largely settled line-up is one of the reasons why they are strong contenders to go all the way at next … [Read more...] about England v Australia talking points ahead of ODI series
