Leading Conservatives taking to the airwaves since the Chris Pincher scandal have been repeatedly quizzed on what the Prime Minister knew and Number 10’s response to the crisis . Here is what each minister said: Friday, July 1: Simon Hart, Welsh Secretary Simon Hart did the morning media rounds for the Government and was unable to confirm whether the alleged assault was being formally investigated . He said it was "early days yet" and that from the perspective of the alleged victims, it could be "counter-productive" to rush any probe. He said the Chief Whip would be having "conversations" throughout the day and that "we might be having a very different conversation as the day goes on". He told Sky News: "This makes me very sad, it makes me sad for everybody who's been involved in these things. It's clearly something which has gone terribly wrong. There is a process, I think it's important that the process is followed. “I think it is entirely right that the Chief Whip … [Read more...] about The ministers wheeled out to respond to Chris Pincher scandal and what they said

Revenge porn: Opinion divided on the new law
By Joe Nimmo Published 1 September 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing In April posting revenge porn on the internet became a specific criminal offence in England and Wales. Jason Asagba - one of the first people convicted under the new law - was given an 18-month conditional discharge earlier . The move to criminalise the offence followed pressure from victims, politicians and campaigners, who pointed out that in two-and-a-half years only six out of 149 allegations led to a police caution or charge. Now, sharing sexual photos or videos of someone else without their consent can result in up to two years in jail. And since the law was changed, there have already been four convictions. But not everyone agrees the new legislation is proving effective. 'Not harsh enough' Folami Prehaye, 45, from Bristol, became a victim of revenge porn when her former … [Read more...] about Revenge porn: Opinion divided on the new law
Is revenge porn already illegal in England?
By Caroline Lowbridge Published 28 December 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Thousands of people have had sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves published on the internet without their consent. So why have only a small number of revenge porn perpetrators been prosecuted, and how is the law catching up with them? While the term "revenge porn" is new, the concept of distributing sexual images of a former partner is not. Before the internet, photos or homemade sex tapes were posted through the doors of friends and relatives. And there have been reports of vengeful exes submitting photos to pornographic magazines since at least the 1980s. Numerous celebrities have also had sex tapes released by former partners without their permission. But campaigners say there has been an explosion in revenge porn over the past few years, largely because of the impact of … [Read more...] about Is revenge porn already illegal in England?
When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?

Ads on TikTok and Instagram ‘behind rise in children vaping’
TikTok and Instagram are behind the increase in the number of children who vape in the UK, a new report states. Newer, disposable e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular with Gen-Zs, who are exposed to advertising on such social media apps. Costing around £5 each and coming in a wide range of fruity flavours instead of an ashy taste and smell, they attract a much younger crowd influenced by what they have seen while scrolling online. According to the survey carried out for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and part-funded by the Department of Health, some 52% of under-18s who vape said disposable e-cigarettes were their favoured product. This represents a dramatic rise on the 7% who said the same thing in 2020. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of ASH, said: ‘The disposable vapes that have surged in popularity over the last year are brightly coloured, pocket-size products with sweet flavours and sweet names. ‘They are widely available for under a fiver – no … [Read more...] about Ads on TikTok and Instagram ‘behind rise in children vaping’

‘Downblousing’ and pornographic deepfakes should be made illegal, the government is told
The sharing of "downblouse" images and nude photos or videos without consent should be made crimes, the Law Commission has recommended . It said the recommendations would bring laws on intimate image abuse into the smartphone era, adding that a "patchwork" of criminal offences has not kept pace with technology and is failing to protect victims while perpetrators evade justice. The commission is proposing the creation of a base offence, with a maximum of six months' imprisonment, covering all acts of intentionally taking or sharing a sexual, nude or intimate photo or video without consent. This would apply regardless of the perpetrator's motivation as the act is "sufficiently wrongful and harmful to warrant criminalisation". The commission also proposes further offences - where the image was taken or shared for sexual gratification, to cause humiliation, alarm or distress, or where the perpetrator has threatened the victim - with tougher prison sentences of two to three … [Read more...] about ‘Downblousing’ and pornographic deepfakes should be made illegal, the government is told
The Government asks the public about revenge porn
Published 19 August 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing It involves posting explicit online pictures of ex-partners to humiliate them after breaking up. Now after much discussion the government is asking the public whether they have, or know someone, who has been a victim of revenge porn. Ministers say it will allow them to understand whether more needs to be done to address the problem. The questionnaire also looks at whether people feel there is enough in place to easily remove graphic images. Last month calls by MPs for revenge porn to be made a criminal offence were rejected by a committee in the House of Lords, because they felt it was already covered by existing laws. It's currently illegal to post revenge porn pictures in some cases such as if they show a child under 18, or if the post is part of sustained campaign of harassment. In July 21-year-old … [Read more...] about The Government asks the public about revenge porn
