Richter's photo-painting Domplatz, Mailand (Cathedral Square, Milan) sold for $37.1 million (£24.4 million) at Tuesday's sale. Tobias Meyer of Sotheby's called the price "a major accomplishment". Richter, 81, also held the previous record for the top price fetched at auction by a living artist. His abstract painting, Abstraktes Bild , sold for £21.3m in 2012. Sotheby's described Domplatz, Mailand, which depicts a cityscape painted in a style that suggests a blurred photograph, as a "masterpiece of 20th Century art" and the "epitome" of the artist's 1960s photo-painting canon. Francis Bacon painting of Lucian Freud sells for £23m

The triptych, Three Studies For A Portrait Of Lucian Freud, went to an anonymous buyer at Sotheby's in London. Cheyenne Westphal, from Sotheby's, said it was "an artwork that radiates 'wall-power'". The sale also saw a Salvador Dali painting reach £13.5m - a new record for any Surrealist work at auction. The price for Portrait de Paul Eluard smashes the previous record for Dali of £4.1m, which was set in London just 24 hours earlier. Francis Bacon’s final Pope painting comes to light after 45 years

His Study of Red Pope 1962, 2nd Version 1971 was the last in the artist's famous series of papal portraits. It was exhibited in Paris in 1971, six months after it was painted, and then in Dusseldorf the following year. It has been in the hands of a private European collector since 1973 but will be auctioned by Christie's in October. For the painting, Bacon revisited Study of Red Pope 1962, which was itself inspired by Diego Velázquez's 1650 masterpiece Portrait of Pope Innocent X. Spanish police recover three stolen Francis Bacon paintings

The five works by the Irish-born British artist are estimated to be worth more than €25m (£22m; $29m). Ten people have been arrested in the investigation. The works were stolen from the Madrid home of José Capelo and belonged to him, a friend of Bacon. It is thought to be the biggest theft of contemporary art in Spain. Bacon died in Madrid in 1992, aged 82. Born in Dublin in 1909, Bacon had no formal training as a painter but became one of the most prominent artists of his era. He died of a heart attack. Head III, which sold for £150 at Bacon's first solo show 54 years ago, was bought for £10.4m by an American private collection. It had been estimated to sell for between £5m and £7m. A 1966 triptych portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne - Bacon's friend, muse and lover - went for £11.3m. Bacon and Rawsthorne became acquainted during preparations for their first solo shows at London's Hanover Gallery in 1949. The work had been estimated to sell for somewhere in the region of £10m to £15m. The painting had been in the hands of a private collector and has not been seen in public for 15 years. The amount was one of the highest fetched by a work of post-war contemporary art at Christie's. The current record for a Bacon was set at Sotheby's in New York in May 2008, when one of the Irish-born artist's Triptychs sold for $86.3m (£55m). Bacon painted more than a dozen portraits of Moraes, a familar Soho denizen who also posed for Lucien Freud. Although experts knew the works by the late painter existed, they had no idea who had bought them. Descendants of the original owner have decided to sell the paintings, which are expected to fetch up to £15m each. The artworks are titled Self-Portrait 1975 and Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980). A Bacon painting featuring his friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud, became the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction when it fetched $142m (£89m) in New York in 2013. Self-Portrait (1975) and Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980) were known to exist but it was not known who owned them. The descendents of the collector decided to put them up for auction earlier this year. The sale also saw Andy Warhol's One Dollar Bill fetch £20.9m. Bacon's Self-Portrait 1975 sold for £15.3m, while the triptych Three Studies for Self-Portrait reached £14.7m. But the artist's Study for a Pope I failed to attract high enough bids to meet the reserve, having had an estimate of £25-35m.
