Just three years ago Swansea City enjoyed their best ever Premier League season, yesterday their worst resulted in relegation from the top-flight. In 36 months Swansea have gone from being held up as a model club to a mess in need of a major overhaul across several departments and facets of its operations. Chairman Huw Jenkins and others did a fantastic job getting the club to the Premier League and - even in these times, that should not be forgotten - but what made this relegation so painful was how avoidable it was. Any number of poor decisions and blunders have led to this point, accumulating over time to lead to a situation where relegation deservedly found Swansea. This was their worst-ever season in the Premier League by some distance, this was no hard-luck story, they got exactly what they deserved. Here we look at how events have unfolded and how an accumulation of poor decision-making and numerous errors of judgement have led to the current sad state of affairs. The story … [Read more...] about The fall of Swansea City: how the model football club imploded

The pundits are convinced that Swansea City are doomed… but all of them see the Swans signing off from the Premier League with victory over Stoke City this afternoon. The BBC’s Mark Lawrenson, Sky’s Paul Merson and Michael Owen of the Metro newspaper are all backing a home win at the Liberty Stadium. But none of them see Swansea getting the 10-goal swing they need to send Southampton, who host champions Manchester City, down instead. Former Liverpool star Lawrenson tells the BBC: “I expect Swansea to win, but not by anywhere near enough for them to stay up. They will be joining Stoke in the Championship next season. “Swans boss Carlos Carvalhal will be leaving at the end of the season. He started well but they have gone eight games without a win, and that is why they are back down at the bottom end of the table, but I believe they will beat Stoke 2-0.” The focus is again on the Swans with former Arsenal star Paul Merson. He tells Sky viewers: … [Read more...] about Swansea City vs Stoke City: What are the pundits tipping for today’s finale?
Graham Potter has stated reports linking him with the managerial role at Swansea City are "just speculation". Current manager Carlos Carvalhal is set to leave the Liberty Stadium after the Swans' final game of the 2017-18 season against Stoke City on Sunday afternoon. Former Wales boss Chris Coleman was the early favourite with bookmakers to return to the club where he spent four years as a player between 1987 and 1991. But it is understood that FK Ostersunds boss Potter - who has twice been considered for the manager's role at the Liberty in the past - is also among the list of candidates for the role when Carvalhal departs. However, the 42-year-old has dismissed claims that he is in the running for the job in South Wales. "No (I’ve not heard anything), it's just speculation," Potter told Ostersunds Posten. "They still have a manager, so I do not really know where it comes from. "I have been linked with a couple of clubs recently. "But from my perspective, I am happy here … [Read more...] about Graham Potter responds after being linked with Swansea City job
Carlos Carvalhal defended his Swansea City record when speaking about the club's impending relegation ahead of their final day clash with Stoke City on Sunday. The Swans were rooted to the foot of the Premier League table when the Portuguese boss arrived in South Wales just days after being sacked by Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday. However, they looked on course to complete another incredible escape after an impressive run of results following Carvalhal's arrival - including home wins against Arsenal and Liverpool in January - helped them climb away from the danger zone. But a woeful run of eight league games without a win looks to have - barring a mathematical miracle on Sunday - ended the Swans' seven year stay in the top flight of English football. Speaking in a press conference ahead of what is set to be his final match in charge of Swansea, Carvalhal read out the statistics of his reign at the Liberty Stadium so far to the assembled media. Figures included the club's … [Read more...] about Exactly where Swansea City would have finished under Carvalhal
