The company in charge of security services at Belfast International Airport claims it “inherited a staffing shortage from the previous provider” which is continuing to cause long hold-ups for passengers getting through security. Responding to complaints about the length of time passengers are having to queue to get through baggage checks at the airport to get to their departure gates, Great Britain-based security and logistics specialist Wilson James said it is in the process of recruiting 50 additional staff in a bid to address the ongoing problems. The worst UK airports for flight punctuality have been revealed, with the longest delays at London Luton - but Birmingham Airport isn't far behind. Departures from the Bedfordshire airport were an average of 20 minutes late in 2017, according to Press Association analysis of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data. Birmingham came fifth in the ranking, with an average wait of 18 minutes - three worse than the national average. London Gatwick recorded the second worst punctuality performance followed by Jersey and Durham Tees Valley, then Birmingham. The ranking takes into account every scheduled and charter flight from 25 of the UK’s major airports. Cancelled flights are not included. The average delay across all the featured airports was 15 minutes. London Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, was found to have the best performance, with aircraft typically taking off 11 minutes late. The Emirates airline is to begin direct flights from Edinburgh Airport to Dubai from October, in a move predicted to greatly increase easy access to Mid-East destinations. Manchester Airport ’s first flight to Mumbai will launch in time for the Diwali festival. Jet Airways has announced it will start the service in November, with the route tipped to deliver a major economic boost to the northern economy. The four-times-a-week service will put business and leisure passengers across Manchester Airport’s catchment area in easy reach of the world’s fastest-growing economy. For the 500,000 people of Indian origin living in the region, it’s expected to be a key link. It is also hoped to bring millions of tourists to the north. A man broke down in court after being cleared of murder 27 years after he was wrongly convicted as a teenager. John Bunn, now 41, wept as he thanked a New York judge for exonerating him of the 1991 shooting of correction officer Rolando Neischer. He was just 14 when arrested over the killing and spent 17 years in prison after being convicted of murder based on tainted evidence.
