A Conservative MP and former army officer has claimed sleeping rough is “a lot more comfortable” than military exercises. During a parliamentary debate he led on street homelessness, Adam Holloway suggested able-bodied people could "make quite a lot of money from begging on the streets of London”. “We have to accept that some people are able to sleep rough in our cities because there are the resources to do so,” said the MP for Gravesham, Kent. Read more True scale of homelessness ‘10 times higher than figures suggest’ The Brexit supporter also attributed rising levels of homelessness to eastern European immigration, arguing “some migrants sleep on the streets by choice, preferring to sleep rough than to pay for accommodation”. The MP said on a recent visit to a soup kitchen he “wandered about while shawls and brand-new trainers were handed out, and I honestly did not hear English being spoken by anyone. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge greeting supporters outside of the Lindo Wing Picture the scene at Kensington Palace on Monday. No, not Apartment 1A, the grand, 21-room home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge where their still-to-be-named baby prince was waking up for the first time yesterday. But around the corner from Clock Court, at Nottingham Cottage, the cosy retreat that Prince Harry shares with Meghan Markle. There, in between finalising next month’s wedding plans and attending an official engagement with her fiance, the American actress was no doubt glued to the TV catching up with events in the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. How could she not have taken it all in? The poised perfection of her soon-to-be sister-in-law Kate cradling her newborn, the cheers of the crowds of well-wishers, and the beaming pleasure of proud father William. Michelle Obama has compared Donald Trump to a neglectful parent who lets their children gorge on sweets all day and stay up late. The former first lady used the parenting allegory to compare her husband's presidency to that of his successor. “I think what we see is what happens when we take things for granted. For the eight years Barack was president, it was like having the ‘good parent’ at home,” she said at the Simmons Leadership Conference in Boston. One of those players stop it becoming one of those days This had all the hallmarks of one of those games. One of those afternoons. A weekend-spoiler, as it is known in some circles. Selhurst Park. Roy Hodgson. Christian Benteke. Mamadou Sakho. The international break. Thank heavens Dwight Gayle decided to move to Newcastle. And then, the game itself. A refereeing performance up there with one of the poorest this season. A penalty conceded, a defence looking rattled. Sadio Mane having his ankles kicked while walking a tightrope; an injury to Adam Lallana, who just had appeared as substitute no more than five minutes before; a reshuffle as Liverpool limped over the line. But then, Mohamed Salah is just one of those players. One of those superstars. He had been quiet in the first half, and he wasn't alone. On the periphery for the majority of a turgid 45 minutes from the away side, his class was limited to glimpses from set-pieces, his corner kicks providing the Reds with their two … [Read more...] about Superstar Salah stops it becoming another one of those days
