Thieves have scammed post office workers out of more than £1,500 using a devious sleight of hand trick. Two men entered the Caistor Post Office at around 3.30pm on Thursday, where they are said to have told the workers that they were wanting to swap £10 notes in £20 notes. The staff member working at the time began to swap the money from one of the men, and while she was counting the it out, it was snatched from her before she could finish. He then folded up some of the notes in his hand, £420 worth, before telling the staff member that he had made a mistake, and wanted the money changed into Euros. While the worker was sorting this out, the man then reached over the counter and tried to grab around £3,000 in Euros, and a quantity of dollars. He dropped some of it on the floor in front of the counter, which was later recovered. The Post Office in Sidley will be closing due to the resignation of the postmaster, it has been confirmed. Just a year after villagers celebrated saving the post office that had served Fernhurst for 135 years from the same historic premises next to the village hall, the future of the service was under threat again.There were big celebrations in February 2018 when village electrical contractor Dudman-Ward opened the relocated facility in his shop in Crossfield.But the retail unit closed last month, and the search was on again to find alternative premises in the village.The closure of Fernhurst Post Office has hit residents hard as it also leaves the village with nowhere to cash money or buy prepaid cards for electricity and gas.
