A new generation of mobile and wireless technology is just around the corner. New 5G technology, a major upgrade on current 4G data connections, is set to arrive in the coming months and could launch on network services used by tens of millions of British consumers. But the race to 5G has many concerned that the technology has been over-hyped, at least in its early form. It has led to legal battles and disputes, smartphone makers rushing to launch new handsets and even global security concerns over the equipment used to run the technology. According to those in the smartphone industry, 5G technology, in some form, is likely to arrive this year. “There has been a major acceleration in one year,” says Enrico Salvatori, president of 5G at Qualcomm, a company making 5G microchips for smartphones. But what exactly is 5G and how will it be different from the current network. For those who struggle to get a 3G signal in their local area, will it actually make any difference? … [Read more...] about What is 5G and how it will change your life?
In the last three years, Huawei has transformed the high-end phone market from a two-horse to a three-horse race. Its main business phone for the last few months has been the Mate 20 Pro, whose principal advantages include having the best battery on the market and the most complete camera system. It also matched Apple and Samsung in handset design, being arguably the best-looking phone on the market. But this week, Huawei launched its new P30 Pro. Although most of the focus is on the 6.5-inch phone's ultra-powerful new camera system, it has other qualities that make it one of the top new options for business users. One of these is battery life: it matches the Mate Pro at the top of the heap. This is very, very important to business users, especially if you're travelling and need to lean on the device more often than normal (either itself or as a mobile hotspot for a laptop or tablet). Its power and storage are also second to none. It comes with internal storage variations of 128GB, … [Read more...] about P30 Pro aims to take a bite out of Apple’s business phone market share
ALIEN-HUNTING scientists have admitted they hope to explore deep Martian cave systems using "space drones". Early tests of the drone technology – which would map underground caverns in the search for alien life – have already taken place in Icelandic lava tubes. SETI – an institute aimed at tracking down extraterrestrial life – managed to successfully map a cave using a Nasa-backed drone with Lidar technology. This involves sending out light waves and tracking reflections to map places too difficult for humans to explore. A team from SETI managed to successfully map the Lofthellir Lava Tube Ice Cave in Iceland, and said the mission could be reproduced on Mars. "We went to Iceland to study a lava tube with massive amounts of ice inside it to understand better both the potential hazards and opportunities presented by the many lava caves we hope to explore on the Moon and Mars," said Pascal Lee, a SETI Institute planetary scientist. "One promising way to explore … [Read more...] about These ‘space drones’ could help Nasa alien-hunters explore deep Martian caves to find life on Mars
EVERYONE is being offered the opportunity to "live forever" – if they sign up to a new social media network. But rather than prolonging your actual life, you'll instead achieve "eternal life" through a virtual clone that teaches itself to copy your personality. It's called Eter9, and is currently only in a "beta" test mode – although anyone can sign up. Once you're logged in, the app works just like a normal social network. You'll share funny posts and upload interesting photos. But the app – which has more than 63,000 users – will pair you up with a "Counterpart", which is an AI version of you that learns what you're like over time. And most creepy of all, the "Counterpart" will make posts for you while you sleep – effectively keeping you online 24/7. "The Counterpart is your Virtual Self that will stay in the system and interact with the world just like you would if you were present," the app's creators explain. "Your Counterpart will learn more with … [Read more...] about Bizarre social network promises to give you ‘eternal life’ – by creating virtual clones of users that carry on after you die
