May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

At least one person was injured at a school in northern Germany on Thursday after a man reportedly carrying a pistol and crossbow opened fire at a school in Bremerhaven. Police said they had arrested the suspected gunman. The incident happened at the Lloyd Gymnasium in the centre of Bremerhaven. "The armed person has been arrested and is in police custody," police said in a statement. The injured person was not a pupil, police said, and has been taken to hospital. "Students are in their classrooms with their teachers. The police have the situation on the ground under control," the statement added. School shootings are relatively rare in Germany, a country with some of the strictest gun laws in Europe. But a recent spate has rattled the population. Germany's online newspaper Nord24 said the person injured on Thursday was a woman who worked at the school. Officers raced to the scene after a pupil called the police upon hearing gunfire, according to local media. … [Read more...] about Crossbow and pistol-yielding suspect detained following German school shooting

January 4, 2021 by www.independent.co.uk

We might only be a few days into 2021, but it appears that there’s already a new social media villain that has the whole of Twitter up in arms. Introducing Bean Dad. On 2 January, musician and podcaster John Roderick shared a Twitter thread about how his hungry nine-year-old daughter had asked him for some baked beans . In a series of 23 tweets, Roderick, who has since deleted his Twitter account, explains how wanted his daughter to learn how to open the can of baked beans herself, writing: “a teaching moment just dropped in my lap!" According to screenshots of his tweets shared on Twitter, he goes on to explain how his daughter couldn’t figure out how the can opener worked - and, hoping that she would figure it out on her own, Roderick refused to tell her. More info Italian UK correspondent Antonello Guerrera slammed the possibility for the UK to perform a U-turn and rejoin the European Union as he branded “quite irrealistic” the projection that the country could go back to a “referendum mode”. Being outside of the EU can be “a bit damaging” for the British economy at the moment, he added but referring to the ongoing energy and Brexit protocol crisis in the UK warned a new referendum to re-enter the EU “would be disastrous” for the country. May 20, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

RNZ The Detail: Journalist David Farrier talks about his reporting on serious allegations of emotional and physical abuse at one of the country’s biggest megachurches: Arise. It was early May and Pastor Peter Mortlock was preaching to the converted. There had been trials and tribulations, highs and lows, but Mortlock had much to be pleased about. He founded Bays Christian Fellowship on Auckland’s North Shore in July 1982 and watched it grow and grow. In the early 2000s, the church, now known as City Impact, built a large facility complete with a state-of-the-art 2100-seat auditorium. Along with 10 campuses in New Zealand, there are 48 mission campuses in India, plus others in the Philippines, Mexico and Tonga. On this particular Sunday, nearly 40 years after the start of the City Impact story, Mortlock had good news and bad news.
