Crossbow and pistol-yielding suspect detained following German school shooting
At least one person was injured at a school in northern Germany on Thursday after a man reportedly carrying a pistol and crossbow opened fire at a school in Bremerhaven. Police said they had arrested the suspected gunman. The incident happened at the Lloyd Gymnasium in the centre of Bremerhaven. "The armed person has been arrested and is in police custody," police said in a statement. The injured person was not a pupil, police said, and has been taken to hospital. "Students are in their classrooms with their teachers. The police have the situation on the ground under control," the statement added. Germany's online newspaper Nord24 said the person injured on Thursday was a woman who worked at the school. Officers raced to the scene after a pupil called the police upon hearing gunfire, according to local media. … [Read more...] about Crossbow and pistol-yielding suspect detained following German school shooting
Vladimir Putin is goading the West into joining the war by creating global food meltdown
In his desperation to achieve some semblance of a victory in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has demonstrated that he is perfectly willing to employ far from conventional military force to achieve his aims . The Russian president began the conflict by threatening to cut off Europe’s energy supply if it continued providing military support to Ukraine; a form of blackmail he has subsequently applied against Finland following Helsinki’s decision this week to apply for Nato membership. He has also made threatening noises about the deadly capabilities of Russia’s nuclear arsenal. And Russian hackers even launched a clumsy attempt to disrupt voting during the Eurovision song contest, which was eventually won by Ukraine. Now, Putin is using the prospect of a global famine to intimidate his foes , with Russia’s Black Sea fleet imposing a highly effective naval blockade against Ukrainian ports, preventing a country known as the "breadbasket of Europe" from exporting vital supplies of grain … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin is goading the West into joining the war by creating global food meltdown

Missed signals in 4 mass shootings: What went wrong?
When Payton Gendron, the 18-year-old white man charged in connection with the murders of 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo , New York, was a senior in high school, he allegedly wrote a paper saying that he wanted to commit murder-suicide, according to authorities. Horrifying Death Toll In Peru
But it turns out the death toll was close to 70,000 - more than twice as high as previous official estimates. That was the grim news Thursday contained in the long-awaited report from the Truth Commission the government set up to document and make public what is known about the war with Shining Path and Tupac Amaru guerrillas. The purpose of the commission and its report is to help Peru come to terms with its past. Although the nine-volume report, delivered to the government on Thursday, blamed the guerrillas for the majority of the deaths, it also cited abuses by security forces. The report exposed two sides of the tragedy, said commission president Salomon Lerner: "One of murder, disappearance and torture on a grand scale and one of idleness, ineptitude and the indifference of those who could have stopped this human catastrophe but did not." The 12-member, government-appointed commission was formed in June 2001 to shed light on the atrocities that occurred from May 1980 … [Read more...] about Horrifying Death Toll In Peru
