In a series of 23 tweets, Roderick, who has since deleted his Twitter account, explains how wanted his daughter to learn how to open the can of baked beans herself, writing: “a teaching moment just dropped in my lap!" How the Bank of England’s money printing spree paved the way for inflation crisis
Printing money to prop up economies is not, traditionally speaking, considered to be good practice. Cranking up the printing presses evokes images of Weimar Germany or Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe: denominations with an absurd row of zeros at the end, or those terrifying images of wheelbarrow loads of cash being transported for use as kindling. Some trepidation, then, greeted the announcement in the financial crisis of quantitative easing - in the UK’s case under Mervyn King, the Bank’s Governor at the time. This type of digital money creation was an innovation to combat the worst recession for decades, and led to some forecasts of a huge wave of inflation. The Bank argued it is nothing like simply printing and spending money - QE is used to buy bonds in financial markets, not to fund spending directly. It can also be removed from circulation later, as is happening now. In the event, hyperinflation did not follow and most advanced economies spent the following decade trying … [Read more...] about How the Bank of England’s money printing spree paved the way for inflation crisis
Sainsbury’s and Tesco to ban junk food offers after Boris Johnson refuses to act
Boris Johnson has said he wants to help struggling families “save on their food bills” by delaying a promised ban on buy-one-get-one-free promotions on junk foods until 2023. Despite the government’s U-turn, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s have now committed to the original October deadline for the ban, and vowed to offer more discounts on healthier products. Jamie Oliver has led protests outside Downing Street after a promise to axe multi-buy promotions on food high in fat, sugar or salt was pushed back to next October. The prime minister, speaking to broadcasters during a visit to in Wales, said: “There are some things at the moment where we think they make very little difference to obesity.” Mr Johnson added: “They can affect people’s weekly outgoings, people’s budgets, and at this particular time – if people can save on their food bills with some offers – then I think we’ve just got to be flexible while continuing to tackle obesity.” Recommended … [Read more...] about Sainsbury’s and Tesco to ban junk food offers after Boris Johnson refuses to act
Cost of living fears just an ‘excuse’ to delay tackling obesity – Jamie Oliver
Jamie Oliver has accused the Government of using families’ suffering amid the cost-of-living crisis as an “excuse” to delay tackling obesity. The British chef presented an Eton Mess dessert to a crowd of around 200 supporters in the pouring rain outside Downing Street , which he said was “symbolic of the mess” ministers have created by postponing England’s National Obesity Strategy by one year. The strategy aims to reduce consumption of food high in fat, sugar and salt (known as HFSS) by banning two-for-one junk food deals and television ads for it before 9pm. Ministers said last week that it had been deferred so they can review the impact on families amid the cost-of-living crisis. Holding a glass dish of the strawberry meringue aloft, Mr Oliver told cheering protesters that was an excuse.
