Who is ‘bean dad’ and why does the internet hate him?

January 4, 2021 by www.independent.co.uk

We might only be a few days into 2021, but it appears that there’s already a new social media villain that has the whole of Twitter up in arms. Introducing Bean Dad. On 2 January, musician and podcaster John Roderick shared a Twitter thread about how his hungry nine-year-old daughter had asked him for some baked beans . In a series of 23 tweets, Roderick, who has since deleted his Twitter account, explains how wanted his daughter to learn how to open the can of baked beans herself, writing: “a teaching moment just dropped in my lap!" According to screenshots of his tweets shared on Twitter, he goes on to explain how his daughter couldn’t figure out how the can opener worked - and, hoping that she would figure it out on her own, Roderick refused to tell her. RNZ The Detail: Journalist David Farrier talks about his reporting on serious allegations of emotional and physical abuse at one of the country’s biggest megachurches: Arise. It was early May and Pastor Peter Mortlock was preaching to the converted. There had been trials and tribulations, highs and lows, but Mortlock had much to be pleased about. He founded Bays Christian Fellowship on Auckland’s North Shore in July 1982 and watched it grow and grow. In the early 2000s, the church, now known as City Impact, built a large facility complete with a state-of-the-art 2100-seat auditorium. Along with 10 campuses in New Zealand, there are 48 mission campuses in India, plus others in the Philippines, Mexico and Tonga. On this particular Sunday, nearly 40 years after the start of the City Impact story, Mortlock had good news and bad news. Can bees count? That’s a more complicated question than you’d expect

May 20, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Two bee or not two bee? That is the question a group of Australian scientists set out to answer : whether bees can distinguish between odd and even numbers. And, perhaps surprisingly, they found the answer to be yes, they can. This is the first example of a skill known as “parity classification” – determining whether a number of objects is odd or even – to have been exhibited in a non-human animal. Researchers wanted to see whether the relatively simple brains of bees (containing just 960,000 neurons in comparison the human brain’s 86 billion) would be able to categorise numbers by their parity. The study was led by Dr Scarlett Howard at Monash University in Australia. To do this they split their bees into two groups. Pieces of white card printed with between one and 10 black shapes were placed next to bee feeders and the bees were allowed to fly around discovering the food associated with each card. One group of bees were taught to associate even numbers a sugary … [Read more...] about Can bees count? That’s a more complicated question than you’d expect

‘The tale of the lonely snail’: Why it was important to find love for Jeremy the lefty snail

June 24, 2020 by www.independent.co.uk

W hen I first started searching for a mate for a rare garden snail, I had no idea it would lead to a global media campaign, an internship at the BBC and a script for a graphic novel. Nor that it would connect me to citizen scientists around the world and the breeding of nearly 15,000 snails. I had simply hoped that this snail whose shell coiled to the left instead of the usual right (nicknamed “Jeremy” after UK left-wing politician Jeremy Corbyn ) would help communicate my previous research on the evolution and genetics of body asymmetry. Although the scientist in me tried to remain disinterested throughout this saga, I am in the end delighted that there was a happy ending for both myself and the snail . My colleagues and I not only found a similar left-coiled snail for Jeremy to mate with, but also managed to learn from breeding the snails together that two lefts can make a right. In work just published in Biology Letters , we showed that lefty shells in … [Read more...] about ‘The tale of the lonely snail’: Why it was important to find love for Jeremy the lefty snail

Sainsbury’s and Tesco to ban junk food offers after Boris Johnson refuses to act

May 20, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Boris Johnson has said he wants to help struggling families “save on their food bills” by delaying a promised ban on buy-one-get-one-free promotions on junk foods until 2023. Despite the government’s U-turn, both Tesco and Sainsbury’s have now committed to the original October deadline for the ban, and vowed to offer more discounts on healthier products. Jamie Oliver has led protests outside Downing Street after a promise to axe multi-buy promotions on food high in fat, sugar or salt was pushed back to next October. The prime minister, speaking to broadcasters during a visit to in Wales, said: “There are some things at the moment where we think they make very little difference to obesity.” Mr Johnson added: “They can affect people’s weekly outgoings, people’s budgets, and at this particular time – if people can save on their food bills with some offers – then I think we’ve just got to be flexible while continuing to tackle obesity.” Recommended … [Read more...] about Sainsbury’s and Tesco to ban junk food offers after Boris Johnson refuses to act

Cost of living fears just an ‘excuse’ to delay tackling obesity – Jamie Oliver

May 20, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Jamie Oliver has accused the Government of using families’ suffering amid the cost-of-living crisis as an “excuse” to delay tackling obesity. The British chef presented an Eton Mess dessert to a crowd of around 200 supporters in the pouring rain outside Downing Street , which he said was “symbolic of the mess” ministers have created by postponing England’s National Obesity Strategy by one year. The strategy aims to reduce consumption of food high in fat, sugar and salt (known as HFSS) by banning two-for-one junk food deals and television ads for it before 9pm. Ministers said last week that it had been deferred so they can review the impact on families amid the cost-of-living crisis. Holding a glass dish of the strawberry meringue aloft, Mr Oliver told cheering protesters that was an excuse. May 20, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A Ukrainian official has said that the U.S. is working on a plan to target Russia's Black Sea Fleet to free up ports whose blockade by Moscow threatens world food supplies. With Ukraine one of the world's biggest suppliers of grain, there are fears the blocking by Russia of the ports that allow the distribution of the food will spur a global food shortage. On Friday, Ukrainian ministry of internal affairs adviser Anton Gerashchenko tweeted that the U.S. "is preparing a plan to destroy the Black Sea Fleet." "The effective work of the Ukrainians on warships convinced (the USA) to prepare a plan to unblock the ports," he said. "Deliveries of powerful anti-ship weapons (Harpoon and Naval Strike Missile with a range of 250-300 km) are being discussed." His message follows a report from Reuters that the White House is working on a plan to put anti-ship missiles in the hands of Ukrainian troops to defeat the naval blockade. More info Italian UK correspondent Antonello Guerrera slammed the possibility for the UK to perform a U-turn and rejoin the European Union as he branded “quite irrealistic” the projection that the country could go back to a “referendum mode”. Being outside of the EU can be “a bit damaging” for the British economy at the moment, he added but referring to the ongoing energy and Brexit protocol crisis in the UK warned a new referendum to re-enter the EU “would be disastrous” for the country.
