2022 Cannes Film Festival: Glamour in times of war

January 17, 2022 by www.dw.com

To provide glamour and still be political: that has always been the claim of the most important European film festival in Cannes . But in times of war in Europe, that combination offers the potential for conflict. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced early on that he did not want to receive any official Russian delegations at the festival, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. However, Fremaux had reserved the right to include Russian filmmakers in the program. Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov has been invited to the competition with his film "Tchaikovsky's Wife." He had not received any Russian state funding, Fremaux argued. Serebrennikov's latest is 'Tchaikovsky's Wife' starring Alyona Mikhailova This is the third time Serebrennikov has been at Cannes. The Russian, who was under house arrest in his native country for two years, now lives in Germany. The biographical film recounts an episode from the life of the world-famous Russian composer, … [Read more...] about 2022 Cannes Film Festival: Glamour in times of war

Family slammed for bullying pregnant woman over “risk” baby has red hair

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A heavily pregnant woman has vented her frustration at feeling "bullied" by family members over the fact her baby may have red hair. Red might be the rarest human hair color in the world, but redheads nevertheless account for a significant proportion of the population. According to online geography resource website WorldAtlas, redheads represent around 2 to 6 percent of the U.S. population, or somewhere between 6 and 18 million people. Despite this, a certain stigma persists among the redheaded population , not least when it comes to dating . A 2012 study saw a group of men and women put on different colored wigs in a dating setting to see who would be approached the most. Redheads suffered the most rejection with just 13.8 percent of men wearing the red wigs being asked to dance, compared with 35 percent of the men donning black locks. It wasn't just restricted to men either. The women wearing red wigs found they were approached by just 29 men, which was … [Read more...] about Family slammed for bullying pregnant woman over “risk” baby has red hair

Obituary: Billy Graham

February 21, 2018 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 21 February 2018 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Once dubbed God's Ambassador, Billy Graham went to the four corners of the world with his evangelical mission. His soft-spoken Southern style was in direct contrast to the fire and brimstone adopted by so many evangelical preachers. Over six decades, he preached to an estimated 215 million people in 185 countries and reached hundreds of millions more through his radio and television ministry. His early audiences were predominantly white, middle-class and conservative. But, as the civil rights movement gained momentum, he began to preach against segregation and formed a sometimes strained friendship with Martin Luther King. William Franklin Graham Jr was born on 7 November 1918 and brought up on the family dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina. His parents were members of the conservative Associate … [Read more...] about Obituary: Billy Graham
