Robin Hood, the masked avenger, glides through the air in slow motion. In the space of a single, high-flying leap, he unsheathes a pair of arrows and lets his bow direct them straight into the hearts of his enemies. With Kingsman’s Taron Egerton in the lead for his latest self-titled cinematic adventure, this Robin Hood can do it all. A master of both archery and martial arts, he’s a preternaturally powerful figure who uses that power to enact a justice that exists outside of the law, here leading a revolt against the corrupt English crown. In short, he’s a superhero. There’s no doubt about it. And he’s not the first folk hero to be given a super-powered makeover onscreen. In last year’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, whoever was worthy to wield Excalibur was also blessed with its magical abilities, not unlike those of Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer from the Marvel universe. The age of the folk hero has long ended. Now that every deed can be … [Read more...] about Robin Hood: Why do we keep turning our folk heroes into superheroes?

Dir: Otto Bathurst; Starring: Taron Egerton, Ben Mendelsohn, Jamie Dornan, Paul Anderson, Jamie Foxx, Eve Hewson. Cert 12A, 116 mins. There isn’t any obvious pressing need for yet another film about Robin Hood. From Errol Flynn in Hollywood’s golden age to Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe more recently, not to mention Richard Greene and Jason Connery on TV, Disney animated versions and Mel Brooks satires about men in tights, audiences have been very well served with tales from Sherwood Forest. However, this rip-roaring version, directed by Otto Bathurst (best known for his work on TV’s Peaky Blinders) is a Robin Hood for the superhero era. As re-imagined here, Robin of Loxley seems partly like a medieval version of Bruce Wayne with a bow and arrow – and partly like a delinquent teen gang member in a hoodie. The new film (produced by Leonardo DiCaprio) tells only a fraction of the full story. It is clearly intended as the first in a franchise. After a clumsy … [Read more...] about This rip-roaring version of Robin Hood is for the superhero era
Taron Egerton made his name in the Kingsman films as sharp-suited spy Eggsy but he tells Laura Harding why he's taking a break from the series, the unexpected downside of playing Elton John and why he was excited to make a new version of Robin Hood. Taron Egerton is bent over rummaging through the fridge in the corner of his hotel room. He eventually pops his head up, brandishing an artfully-designed frosted glass bottle. "Coconut water! That is what people drink, isn't it?" he says, with a raised eyebrow. "I feel like when you are wearing a hat like this you can drink coconut water." Indeed he is wearing quite the hat, a broad brimmed black number, perched on top of his newly-shaven head. The change to his appearance is still fresh and he is still feeling self-conscious about it. "I just finished the Elton John thing and I had this awful hair so I shaved it cos they had thinned it right out and given me this bald patch. "It was very cathartic getting rid of it and also, not to put a … [Read more...] about From Robin Hood to Elton John

While everyone may be getting pretty excited about the big upcoming Robin Hood movie starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx and Jamie Dornan, it turns out that there are actually a few more films about Nottingham’s most famous figure to look out for. There are currently a total of seven different films based on the prince of thieves currently in the pipeline, including the highly published Lionsgate blockbuster due for release in November. Disney is currently working on the film Nottingham & Hood, which will be a live-action remake of the company’s 1973 animated film Robin Hood in which Robin was portrayed as a fox. Though there’s no release date announced just yet, it’s thought that the Disney production will take on a similar tone to Pirates of the Caribbean, with Brandon Barker writing.
