After he announced his resignation as Speaker, and received a fawning and utterly unparliamentary round of applause from his fellow Brexitphobes on the Opposition benches, Bercow lost it. He went nuts. He was puffing himself up, as usual, as the sole guardian of parliamentary convention and general political decency when an MP had the temerity to interrupt and contradict him. Those who have accused me of bending the rules are utterly wrong, Bercow was saying. Tellingly, he kicked off his one-man orgy of self-congratulation by saying: ‘Can I just say…? Well, whether I can or not, I’m going to.’ What a wonderful and unwitting insight into his approach to … [Read more...] about John Bercow’s seething contempt for Brexiteers

Steerpike 10 September 2019 7:35 AM 10 September 2019 7:35 AM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp Now that John Bercow has announced his imminent departure, an inevitable political bun fight will surely follow. The outgoing Speaker told colleagues that he would be stepping down from his post by 31 October, the day the UK is supposed to leave the European Union. The move comes after the Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom told the Mail on Sunday that the Tories were planning to break with convention and field a candidate in his Buckingham constituency at the next election. So who will replace the controversial Commons referee? The most likely runners and riders are outlined below: Lindsay Hoyle (Lab)notably ticked off SNP MPs as they sang the EU’s official anthem ‘Ode to Joy’ during a vote on the Brexit Bill, telling them ‘I don’t want a sing-off in the chamber’. Perhaps Mr Hoyle could have stepped in during last … [Read more...] about Who will replace John Bercow as Speaker?
brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Speaker John Bercow today dramatically announced he is quitting by October 31 amid a huge Tory backlash at his handling of Brexit. Mr Bercow dropped the bombshell in a statement to the House of Commons this afternoon, watched by wife Sally. He said he would resign tonight in the unlikely event that MPs vote to hold an early election tonight. To cheers and laughter from Labour MPs, he said otherwise the least disruptive would be for him to quit on October 31 - the current deadline for Brexit. The move amounts to Mr Bercow jumping before he is pushed, as the Conservatives have declared they will break convention by running a candidate against him in Buckingham at the next election. In a series of stinging shots at Boris Johnson, a tearful Mr Bercow said he made 'no apology' for being the 'backbenchers' backstop' while in the chair - warning against 'degrading' Parliament. 'At the 2017 election, I promised my wife … [Read more...] about Speaker John Bercow announces he will QUIT by October 31
Steerpike 11 June 2019 3:22 PM 11 June 2019 3:22 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp No political rivalry in recent years has been as fierce as the one between Andrea Leadsom and the Speaker of the House, John Bercow. As leader of the Commons, Leadsom spent a huge amount of time in the Chamber speaking on the government’s behalf, and frequently clashed with the pugnacious Bercow over parliamentary procedure and each other’s manners. And while Leadsom has since resigned from her position in May’s government, it appears that her hostility towards the Speaker hasn’t subsided. In fact, it seems that Leadsom may even have incorporated her dislike of Bercow into her official Tory leadership campaign. At a press gallery lunch this afternoon, Leadsom insisted that Bercow would not be able to stop a no-deal Brexit if she became Prime Minister, and that she would take Britain out of the EU on 31 October, come what may. Going … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom: ‘Bollocks to Bercow’
Katy Balls 22 May 2019 7:59 PM 22 May 2019 7:59 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp After the 1922 executive of Conservative backbenchers decided this evening to wait until Friday to speak to the Prime Minister about announcing an exit date, there had been a view that Theresa May was safe in her position – at least for 48 hours. That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?
