In a debate in Westminster Hall in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom called for the Government to urgently commit to a full review of the business case for HS2 before the Notice to Proceed is granted later this year. In the first debate she has led since returning to the backbenches after stepping down as Leader of the Commons, Andrea felt it was important that HS2 was one of the first issues she raised in Parliament on behalf of her constituents, and wanted to put on record her strong concerns about the business case and value for taxpayer money.Andrea said:“There is no doubt that investment in infrastructure is the key to solving the UK’s productivity challenge, and we have to see investment that benefits our entire United Kingdom.“Getting the best value for money has to be at the heart of all that we do, and it is vital that we make sure we are investing in the right infrastructure projects.“HS2 is one of the single … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom MP calls for full HS2 spending review

As leader of the Commons, Leadsom spent a huge amount of time in the Chamber speaking on the government’s behalf, and frequently clashed with the pugnacious Bercow over parliamentary procedure and each other’s manners. And while Leadsom has since resigned from her position in May’s government, it appears that her hostility towards the Speaker hasn’t subsided. In fact, it seems that Leadsom may even have incorporated her dislike of Bercow into her official Tory leadership campaign. At a press gallery lunch this afternoon, Leadsom insisted that Bercow would not be able to stop a no-deal Brexit if she became Prime Minister, and that she would take Britain out of the EU on 31 October, come what may. Going … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom: ‘Bollocks to Bercow’
Mark Harper has never taken any mind altering substances, but he does have a sign altering highlighter pen. This was what allowed the Tory leadership candidate you’ve never heard of to launch his Tory leadership campaign in front of a big sign that had been corrected for dramatic effect, from “Promising Brexit” to “Delivering Brexit”, the Promising lingering there, struck through in pink highlighter, and replaced with Delivering. So it was perhaps a surprise that Mark Harper, who’s not “Promising” Brexit, like some wuss, but actually “Delivering” it, wasted absolutely no time at all in telling his very small audience, “It is not going to be possible to leave the EU on 31 October.” He’s right, obviously, but one of the upsides of no one knowing who you are, at least as far as the Conservative Party is concerned, is that no one is going to listen to a word you say. We’ll tell you what’s … [Read more...] about Opinion: Andrea Leadsom wants to move on from Brexit. Bless

The former Commons leader was responding to a leaked warning from the Chancellor that shifting to a zero-carbon economy would cost £1 trillion, and the UK was not on track to meet its carbon reduction targets. Mrs Leadsom, one of 11 declared candidates in the Tory leadership race officially starting on Monday, told the House magazine that tackling climate change was a “massive opportunity” for the UK to “lead the world”. Katy Balls 22 May 2019 7:59 PM 22 May 2019 7:59 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp After the 1922 executive of Conservative backbenchers decided this evening to wait until Friday to speak to the Prime Minister about announcing an exit date, there had been a view that Theresa May was safe in her position – at least for 48 hours. That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?
