The resignation of Andrea Leadsom as leader of the Commons has left Theresa May’s government on the brink of collapse. She stepped down from her cabinet role on Wednesday in “yet another devastating blow for the prime minister”, says PoliticsHome, as bookmakers slashed the odds of May leaving office before the end of June to 4/6. Leadsom was due to announce when the prime minister’s Withdrawal Agreement Bill – the legislation needed to implement the agreement between the UK and EU – would be introduced, but revealed that she could not do it as she did not believe in the plan. She has also indicated she could throw her hat into the ring to succeed May, having dramatically pulled out of the last leadership race in 2016, handing the keys to Downing Street to her rival. What did she do before politics? Leadsom's pre-politics career was in finance, as a banker and fund manager. Aged 30, she was financial institutions director for Barclays and so had a … [Read more...] about Who is Andrea Leadsom?

That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?
Theresa May's cabinet is at war over No Deal after Phillip Hammond said Brexiteer Tories have 'no mandate' for crashing out of the EU. Andrea Leadsom has hit back at the Chancellor by saying that Britain must leave the EU on October 31 at all costs as infighting among Theresa May's ministers broke out. Today the Prime Minister will present her 'bold' new deal to her cabinet, which is packed with Brexiteers and remainers all plotting to replace her. Tonight Mr Hammond will use a keynote speech to blast Tory leadership candidates including Boris Johnson, saying those advocating No Deal are 'hijacking the result of the referendum'. But Ms Leadsom hit back today: 'I would like us to have a deal but if we get to the end of October and it's not possible to get a deal, leaving the EU is the most important thing'. Ms Leadsom refused to be drawn on whether she would resign if Mrs May tries to push for a permanent customs union to appease Labour MPs she needs to get … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom says Britain must leave the EU on October 31

Talks on a compromise deal were continuing in Whitehall, with Labour insisting the Government still needs to shift on its red lines. Discussions on Tuesday were described as “constructive and detailed” by Downing Street and “very robust” by Labour, with shadow business secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey saying: “Nothing has been agreed yet.” Senior Tory backbenchers on the executive of the 1922 Committee were due to meet in Westminster to discuss the outcome of a meeting at which chair Sir Graham Brady is believed to have set out … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom mulls renewed bid for Conservative leadership
