That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?

Andrea Leadsom has resigned as leader of the House of Commons, saying she no longer believes the government’s approach will deliver Brexit. Leadsom, who has signalled that she expects to launch a leadership bid, published her resignation letter after Theresa May resisted intense pressure to step aside. She was one of several cabinet ministers, including Penny Mordaunt and Sajid Javid, who were known to be unhappy with some of the 10 concessions set out by May on Tuesday, in a bid to win the support of Labour backbenchers for her deal. In particular, they felt they had not signed off one of the prime minister’s central pledges, to offer MPs a vote on holding a second Brexit referendum – and if necessary, legislate to hold one. In her resignation letter, published on Twitter, Leadsom said she had previously accepted “some uncomfortable compromises” over Brexit, but went on: “I no longer believe our approach will deliver on the referendum result”. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom quits over Theresa May’s Brexit bill
Commons leader Andrea Leadsom has announced her resignation from the government. Mrs Leadsom said it was with "a heavy heart" that she was standing down, but that she no longer believes the government's Brexit approach will deliver on the referendum result. Mrs Leadsom was a high-profile Brexiteer, becoming a figurehead of the Vote Leave campaign. Her resignation, which comes amid a backlash over Theresa May's new Brexit plan, is the 36th by a minister under Mrs May, 21 of whom have been over Brexit. Posting her resignation letter on Twitter, she wrote: "It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government." Mrs Leadsom, a former Tory leadership candidate in 2016, outlined four reasons for her decision in her letter. Addressing the letter to Theresa May, she wrote: "1. I do not believe that we will be a truly sovereign United Kingdom through the deal that is now proposed; "2. I have always … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns as Leader of the House of Commons

Not content though with just one attack on the government, the Speaker also found time to launch a dig at his favourite rival in the House of Commons: Andrea Leadsom. After the Commons leader entered the Chamber to sit on the front bench, and was checking her phone — presumably waiting on updates from Number 10 — Bercow appeared to be peeved that he didn’t have her full attention, and launched a broadside at her and the deputy chief whip, Christopher Pincher: ‘I note that as the right honourable gentleman asks his question and I respond, the leader of the house [Leadsom] is playing with her electronic device and … [Read more...] about Watch: John Bercow lays into Andrea Leadsom
