Andrea Leadsom has resigned from government, announcing she was standing down as Leader of the House of Commons with a "heavy heart". In a lengthy resignation letter, Mrs Leadsom slammed Mrs May's recent concessions on Brexit including the facilitation of a second referendum. Laying out her four main reasons for quitting, Mrs Leadsom said she no longer agrees with the government's approach to delivering the result of the Brexit referendum. Her resignation, which comes amid a backlash against Theresa May's Brexit plan from Conservative MPs, is the 36th by a minister under Mrs May, 21 of whom have been over Brexit. Andrea Leadsom's resignation letter in full Dear Prime Minister, I am proud to have served in your Government since 2016, first as your Environment Secretary and for the last two years as Leader of the House of Commons, and pay tribute to the excellent work of my civil servants in both roles. That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Lloyd Russell-Moyle (Brighton Kemptown) attacked the “bigots that don’t want LGBT people to be heard in schools” after the controversy over classes being suspended at schools in Birmingham. But he also criticised Mrs May, pointing out that she had “campaigned to keep Section 28” which prevented the “promotion of homosexuality”, which he said “led to millions of young people like myself growing in fear of being LGBT”. Mr Russell-Moyle said: “I thought the Prime Minister had seen the error of her ways, but this morning the Leader of the House (Mrs Leadsom) said on radio that parents should decide when they are … [Read more...] about PM must ‘condemn’ Andrea Leadsom over LGBT education comments, says Labour MP
Tory Andrea Leadsom has thrown down the gauntlet to Theresa May with a public warning not to allow a long Brexit delay. The Brexit-backing Commons Leader demanded the Prime Minister delay the process of leaving the EU by no more than two months. And she said if the EU suggests a nine-month extension, it must come back for a further vote by MPs in Parliament. Ms Leadsom went public with her slapdown after pressuring Theresa May in yesterday's meeting of Cabinet. Appearing on LBC Radio, she said the Prime Minister is "extremely frustrated" but "remains determined to take us out of the EU". She added: "It's absolutely essential we're out of the EU before the European elections. "It would be extraordinary for the people who voted to leave the EU to find us fielding candidates for these next elections." The European elections are held towards the end of May. Ms Leadsom refused to deny claims she told the Cabinet: "This used to be the Cabinet that would deliver Brexit - and now from what I'm … [Read more...] about Tory Andrea Leadsom throws down brutal public gauntlet to Theresa May on Brexit
Steerpike 18 March 2019 5:27 PM 18 March 2019 5:27 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp Today, the Speaker John Bercow dealt a harsh blow to the government’s Brexit strategy after announcing that he would block a third vote on Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement, unless it changed in a substantial way. Not content though with just one attack on the government, the Speaker also found time to launch a dig at his favourite rival in the House of Commons: Andrea Leadsom. After the Commons leader entered the Chamber to sit on the front bench, and was checking her phone — presumably waiting on updates from Number 10 — Bercow appeared to be peeved that he didn’t have her full attention, and launched a broadside at her and the deputy chief whip, Christopher Pincher: ‘I note that as the right honourable gentleman asks his question and I respond, the leader of the house [Leadsom] is playing with her electronic device and … [Read more...] about Watch: John Bercow lays into Andrea Leadsom
