As leader of the Commons, Leadsom spent a huge amount of time in the Chamber speaking on the government’s behalf, and frequently clashed with the pugnacious Bercow over parliamentary procedure and each other’s manners. And while Leadsom has since resigned from her position in May’s government, it appears that her hostility towards the Speaker hasn’t subsided. In fact, it seems that Leadsom may even have incorporated her dislike of Bercow into her official Tory leadership campaign. At a press gallery lunch this afternoon, Leadsom insisted that Bercow would not be able to stop a no-deal Brexit if she became Prime Minister, and that she would take Britain out of the EU on 31 October, come what may. Katy Balls 22 May 2019 7:59 PM 22 May 2019 7:59 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp After the 1922 executive of Conservative backbenchers decided this evening to wait until Friday to speak to the Prime Minister about announcing an exit date, there had been a view that Theresa May was safe in her position – at least for 48 hours. That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?
Steerpike 18 March 2019 5:27 PM 18 March 2019 5:27 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp Today, the Speaker John Bercow dealt a harsh blow to the government’s Brexit strategy after announcing that he would block a third vote on Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement, unless it changed in a substantial way. Not content though with just one attack on the government, the Speaker also found time to launch a dig at his favourite rival in the House of Commons: Andrea Leadsom. After the Commons leader entered the Chamber to sit on the front bench, and was checking her phone — presumably waiting on updates from Number 10 — Bercow appeared to be peeved that he didn’t have her full attention, and launched a broadside at her and the deputy chief whip, Christopher Pincher: ‘I note that as the right honourable gentleman asks his question and I respond, the leader of the house [Leadsom] is playing with her electronic device and … [Read more...] about Watch: John Bercow lays into Andrea Leadsom

The Commons Leader said she had the “greatest regard for the role of the chair”, but said it was vital that the Speaker presides over the chamber “impartially”. Mrs Leadsom and Mr Bercow’s fractious relationship has been subject to much speculation in Westminster after he was accused of calling her a “stupid woman”. The Speaker also faced a political storm last month over his handling of the Brexit process. In an interview with the Press Association, Mrs Leadsom said: “I have the greatest regard for the role of the chair. “It’s absolutely vital that the Speaker of the House of Commons presides over the chamber impartially and with courtesy and respect. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom urges John Bercow to treat colleagues with ‘courtesy and respect’
ANDREA Leadsom has accused Speaker John Bercow of failing to treat his staff with “courtesy and respect”. The Commons Leader, who has repeatedly clashed with Mr Bercow since he admitted calling her a “stupid woman” last year, also questioned his “impartiality” over Brexit. It follows the controversy over his decision to break centuries of convention to allow a Brexit-wrecking motion to go ahead last month. Mrs Leadsom said: “I have the greatest regard for the role of the chair. “It’s absolutely vital that the Speaker of the House of Commons presides over the chamber impartially and with courtesy and respect. “And I also do hope and expect people to treat each other with courtesy and respect, whether inside the chamber or outside of it, so I have no issue at all with the role of the chair. “I think that it’s an absolutely crucial role but at the same time having spent a significant part of my life in the … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom accuses Commons Speaker John Bercow of not treating staff with ‘courtesy and respect’
