brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Speaker John Bercow today dramatically announced he is quitting by October 31 amid a huge Tory backlash at his handling of Brexit. Mr Bercow dropped the bombshell in a statement to the House of Commons this afternoon, watched by wife Sally. He said he would resign tonight in the unlikely event that MPs vote to hold an early election tonight. To cheers and laughter from Labour MPs, he said otherwise the least disruptive would be for him to quit on October 31 - the current deadline for Brexit. The move amounts to Mr Bercow jumping before he is pushed, as the Conservatives have declared they will break convention by running a candidate against him in Buckingham at the next election. In a series of stinging shots at Boris Johnson, a tearful Mr Bercow said he made 'no apology' for being the 'backbenchers' backstop' while in the chair - warning against 'degrading' Parliament. 'At the 2017 election, I promised my wife … [Read more...] about Speaker John Bercow announces he will QUIT by October 31

As leader of the Commons, Leadsom spent a huge amount of time in the Chamber speaking on the government’s behalf, and frequently clashed with the pugnacious Bercow over parliamentary procedure and each other’s manners. And while Leadsom has since resigned from her position in May’s government, it appears that her hostility towards the Speaker hasn’t subsided. In fact, it seems that Leadsom may even have incorporated her dislike of Bercow into her official Tory leadership campaign. At a press gallery lunch this afternoon, Leadsom insisted that Bercow would not be able to stop a no-deal Brexit if she became Prime Minister, and that she would take Britain out of the EU on 31 October, come what may. John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has said it is “blindingly obvious” that the new Conservative prime minister will not be able to suspend parliament to push through a no-deal Brexit. The Speaker said it would not be an option after outrage across the political spectrum when the leadership hopeful Dominic Raab suggested he might try to take that path. “That is simply not going to happen. It is just so blindingly obvious that it almost doesn’t need to be stated, but apparently, it does and therefore I have done,” he told MPs. Matt Hancock, another Tory leadership contender, called for all his rivals to rule out the possibility of ending the parliamentary session to stop MPs from voting on whether there should be a no-deal Brexit. He said it undermined parliamentary democracy and risked a general election. Rory Stewart, another contender, called the suggestion “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”, adding: “It … [Read more...] about Next Tory PM will not be able to suspend parliament – Bercow
John Bercow has said he plans to stay in his post as Speaker of the House of Commons despite previous expectations he was about to leave, risking the fury of hardline Eurosceptics who believe he wants to thwart a no-deal Brexit. The Speaker told the Guardian it was not “sensible to vacate the chair” while there were major issues before parliament. And, amid growing indications that frontrunners for the Conservative leadership are willing to depart the EU without a deal, he warned candidates not to try to force such an outcome without the permission of MPs. Bercow had told friends he intended to stand down as Speaker this summer, possibly in July, after concluding 10 years in the post. But his remarks on Tuesday appear to confirm reports he was reconsidering after the UK did not leave the EU at the end of March. Speaking to the Guardian after a speech in Washington, Bercow said: “I’ve never said anything about going in July of this year. Secondly, I do feel that … [Read more...] about John Bercow defies Eurosceptics with vow to stay on as Speaker
Katy Balls 22 May 2019 7:59 PM 22 May 2019 7:59 PM Share Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Email Whatsapp After the 1922 executive of Conservative backbenchers decided this evening to wait until Friday to speak to the Prime Minister about announcing an exit date, there had been a view that Theresa May was safe in her position – at least for 48 hours. That is now in doubt. Andrea Leadsom has tonight announced her resignation as Leader of the House. In her resignation letter, the Brexiteer minister says that she has made the decision to leave government due to concerns over May’s position on Brexit. Of the deal as it now stands, Leadsom says she is concerned that May’s latest pitch means the government is ‘facilitating’ a second referendum and says there has been a ‘breakdown’ in the way the government approves Brexit policy: It is with great regret and a heavy heart that I have decided to resign from the Government. … [Read more...] about Andrea Leadsom resigns – will others now follow?
