Raging flood waters have swamped homes after torrential downpours brought a month's rainfall in just an hour - while snow sweeps across parts of Britain amid urgent Amber and Yellow weather warnings. Residents in Whiston near Sheffield were photographed trying to get back into their severely flooded homes on Thursday afternoon, following a Met Office flood alert warning of a 'danger to life', amid fears that four inches of rain could fall in just eight hours. Dramatic photos show residents wading through dirty flood water, cars abandoned and homes which have been submerged by nearly ten feet of water in some parts. In Scotland, arctic winds are threatening to bring heavy snowfall as a low-pressure system moves in. Snow ploughs were used on frostbitten roads to prevent travel chaos as roads became blanketed with ice. And in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, residents were evacuated from 35 homes following a mudslide caused by heavy rain, as persistent downpours battered … [Read more...] about Residents are evacuated as raging flood waters swamp homes after torrential downpours with a MONTH’S rain falling in just an HOUR – while SNOW also hits Britain

British officials have taken the first steps to repatriate children stranded in Syria by liaising directly with agencies on the ground to identify unaccompanied minors for “safe passage” back to the UK. Whitehall sources have confirmed they are working with “various agencies” in north-east Syria – believed to include the International Committee of the Red Cross – to kickstart the process of transferring children of British parents linked to Islamic State back to the UK. Among the first cases identified are three orphans, believed to have travelled to Syria with their parents from London five years ago and who are currently in Raqqa, under the control of the Kurdish-dominated militia, the Syrian Democratic Forces. Transporting the children to Iraq, where they can be flown from the city of Erbil to the UK, has been evaluated by Kurdish officials and British charities as both quick and safe, especially during the five-day ceasefire. The development … [Read more...] about Britain makes move to bring home children of Isis suspects from Syria
Thousands of people have been sharing incorrect photographs of the fires in the Amazon rain forest on social media. Nasa has released images from space showing the extent of the fires, but many on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have been sharing photographs or earlier Amazonian fires or blazes from elsewhere in the world. Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio shared one image on his Instagram feed which achieved three million likes - however the photograph was taken in 2018 and is not from the current blaze. Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has shared an image of a fire along with the hashtag #prayforamazonia. But unfortunately for the winger, the photograph was first published in 2013 Leonardo DiCaprio also called for action on the Amazon, sharing a dramatic image of scorched earth, but it was taken a year ago Actor David Licauco also shared photographs of trees on fire, but none of them related to the current blaze Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo shared an image which … [Read more...] about Celebrities are sharing FAKE photos of huge Amazonian wildfires that actually show historical blazes or somewhere else entirely
As he posed in Lycra cycling shorts on the French Riviera and unashamedly courted the far right with hardline policy promises on Islam and French national identity, there was a sense of déjà-vu about Nicolas Sarkozy’s summer holiday. But that was exactly how he wanted it: the rightwing former president, one of the most polarising figures in French politics, is about to launch his battle to win back the presidency and return to power in 2017. Only six months ago, Sarkozy’s quest to reconquer the Elysée palace and avenge his 2012 defeat by the Socialist François Hollande seemed the doomed dream of an election addict who once said of politics that “you have to withdraw the needle slowly” but who never managed to kick his habit. Nicknamed “the hyper-president” for his frenetic term in power from 2007 to 2012, Sarkozy still has the approval of a portion of sympathisers in his now renamed party, Les Républicains, but he is … [Read more...] about Le comeback kid? On the wall in the new presidential campaign offices of France’s Front National leader Marine Le Pen hangs a portrait of Hollywood tough guy Clint Eastwood. He might seem an odd choice of pinup for Europe’s biggest far-right, nationalist, anti-immigration party, but Le Pen admires Eastwood’s “bravery” in voting for Donald Trump in the US election last month. Dirty Harry, like Trump himself, has become something of a feel-good mascot for the French far-right’s battle for the leadership of the country. Instead of a gun, the ageing but still snarling Eastwood is pointing a blue rose, Le Pen’s new campaign symbol. Trump’s US victory blew apart any notion of foregone electoral conclusions, leading Paris’s mainstream politicians to warn that the world’s next political earthquake could happen in France. Le Pen winning the French presidential election in five months’ time – something that had always been seen as impossible … [Read more...] about The fear of Marine Le Pen – will the next political earthquake happen in France?
