Rory Burns and Ollie Pope display familiar signs of impatience as England batsmen continue to toil

· April 8, 2021 ·

Burns and Pope fall cheaply for Surrey Lawrence and Westley shine for Essex Opener Robson hits 165 for Middlesex D ay one: Surrey (220-9) vs Gloucestershire After a lean winter both of Surrey’s England batsmen, Rory Burns and Ollie Pope, needed their springs to blossom but they were dismissed for four and 22 respectively by a similar impatience. During their winter Test series in India, England’s batsmen interpreted the message to be positive so enthusiastically that some tried a shot at almost every ball - Pope for one dancing down the turning pitch in Ahmedabad to the left-arm spin of Axar Patel and being, not surprisingly, stumped. In their growing desperation England’s batsmen, apart from their captain Joe Root, seemed not to observe Rishabh Pant’s shot-selection. Pant may have given the impression he slogged every ball but no. He blocked or left 138 balls in that series; sure, he made hay off the 100 balls he attacked but, normally, only after playing himself … [Read more...] about Rory Burns and Ollie Pope display familiar signs of impatience as England batsmen continue to toil

Terrifying flying ‘Monkeydactyl’ dinosaur with razor teeth ‘was FIRST creature with opposable thumbs’

· April 13, 2021 ·

EVIDENCE of a sharp toothed tree climbing dinosaur has been discovered and experts are calling it the "Monkeydactyl". The ancient creature is thought be the oldest example of an animal with 'opposed thumbs'. Opposable thumbs are usually a feature associated with humans and monkeys. They set us apart from other species because they help us use our hands to do things like gripping and opening items. The Monkeydactyl fossil was found in the Tiaojishan Formation of Liaoning in China. Scientists also refer to the creature as Kunpengopterus antipollicatus. An international team of researchers used a small CT scanner to find out more about the dinosaur's structure. This is how they discovered its opposable thumbs and beak lined with sharp teeth. The creature also had a 85cm (33.5 inch) wingspan so may have flew between trees when it wasn't climbing up them. Monkeydactyl's have been put in the pterosaurs category of dinosaurs. This group are thought to have … [Read more...] about Terrifying flying ‘Monkeydactyl’ dinosaur with razor teeth ‘was FIRST creature with opposable thumbs’

Stunning photos show swooping fighter jets, massive explosions and touching homecomings for the Military Visual Awards

· April 13, 2021 ·

STUNNING photos showing swooping fighter jets, massive explosions and touching homecomings have been selected for the Military Visual Awards this year. These incredible scenes aim to celebrate photography of the brave men and women in uniform and also give a glimpse into their daily life. The powerful images show soldiers from around the globe - including Brits, Americans and Swedish troops - on tour. But they also capture the effects of conflict with a coffin draped in the star spangled banner flag and a marine kissing his sweetheart as he returns home. In one of the photos, a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter whips up a mini tornado with its powerful rotor blades, while Call of Duty-style marines wield machine guns. The annual Military Visual Awards was founded in 2018 to showcase first-class military photography and videos. US Marine Dana Beesley - who leads a 16-marine team specializing in military PR - was crowned the MVA photographer of the year. Her … [Read more...] about Stunning photos show swooping fighter jets, massive explosions and touching homecomings for the Military Visual Awards

London Bridge attack – Jack Merritt, 25, remembered as ‘beautiful spirit’ as dad names him as victim of terror attack

· November 30, 2019 ·

A HEARTBROKEN dad today revealed his son was one of the victims killed in the London Bridge terror attack. Jack Merritt, 25, was remembered as a "beautiful spirit" after he and a woman were killed in the knife rampage on Friday afternoon. Jack was a course counsellor for Learning Together, which was hosting the event at Fishmongers' Hall in central London when terrorist Usman Khan , 28, unleashed his horror attack while wearing a fake suicide jacket. The terrorist was out on licence following his release from prison in December last year after being convicted of terrorism offences when he carried out the attack. Grieving dad David Merritt today paid tribute to his son as a "beautiful spirit" - and referenced his son's extensive work with inmates. Writing on Twitter, he said: "My son, Jack, who was killed in this attack, would not wish his death to be used as the pretext for more draconian sentences or for detaining people unnecessarily. "R.I.P. Jack: you were … [Read more...] about London Bridge attack – Jack Merritt, 25, remembered as ‘beautiful spirit’ as dad names him as victim of terror attack

· April 13, 2021 ·

LORRAINE host Ranvir Singh was left mortified this morning as she was forced on air with "big hair" after losing track of time. The 43-year-old star is covering the show while presenter Lorraine Kelly enjoys an Easter break - and Ranvir was caught off guard when she was needed on set for the usual live link during Good Morning Britain . She surprised GMB hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray with her unfinished look, admitting she'd had to race to the studio from her dressing room. The star explained that she'd become engrossed by Kate and Adil's interview with a US couple who adopted a baby they'd found on the subway shortly before she was due on. Seeing herself on camera, Ranvir gasped: "My hair's a bit big!" while Adil laughed. She went on: "I was in my dressing room and I was too busy watching that interview, they were like: 'You've got to be upstairs in the studio!' so I had to run in because I was so captivated by the interview." Kate chuckled in … [Read more...] about Lorraine host Ranvir Singh mortified as she’s forced on air with ‘big hair’ after losing track of time
