Twelve members of a religious cult known as "The Saints" have been arrested in connection with the death of an 8-year-old girl who die after being refused life-saving medication in the belief that God would heal her instead. Elizabeth Struhs, who suffered from Type 1 diabetes, died on January 7 at her family's home in Rangeville, in the Australian state of Queensland. Her mother and father, who have since been charged with murder, did not give her any insulin in the six days leading up to her death, police said. The couple and other church members held back on calling paramedics until 5:30 p.m. the day after the child had died, it's alleged, because they believed she would be resurrected, according the Courier-Mail newspaper. Earlier this year, the parents, Kerrie and Jason Struhs, were charged with a string of offenses including murder, torture and failing to provide the necessities of life for their daughter, The Guardian reported. The couple has not yet revealed how they … [Read more...] about Cult members let girl die because they thought God would save her—police

Companies covering abortion travel costs for employees could face privacy hurdles
After the U.S. Supreme Court revoked the federal right to an abortion that's been in place for half a century, companies like Amazon, Disney, Apple and JP Morgan pledged to cover travel costs for employees who live in states where the procedure is now illegal so they can terminate pregnancies. But the companies gave scant or no details on how they will do this and it's not clear if they will be able to — legally — while protecting employees' privacy and keeping them safe from prosecution. "Most employers were not prepared for Roe to be overturned, and even those that were didn't realize the law would literally be changed the next minute," said Brian Kropp, a vice president at the consulting firm Gartner. "They're trying to play catch-up." Kropp said many companies announced plans to offer travel benefits without the infrastructure in place to make them work. Some, he added, are creating supplementary policies that employees can buy to cover abortion travel, while others … [Read more...] about Companies covering abortion travel costs for employees could face privacy hurdles
Rihanna Boycotts Super Bowl In Solidarity With Colin Kaepernick. Celebrities Applaud. | The Daily Wire
Music icon Rihanna will no longer perform at the Super Bowl half-time show in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, whom she presumably feels has been unfairly blackballed by the NFL for his protest of the national anthem during company time in front of paying customers. According to PEOPLE , a source close to the singer confirmed that she was indeed offered a chance to perform at Super Bowl 2019 alongside Maroon 5 but ultimately declined the offer. “Yes they asked her and yes, she declined,” the source said, adding that Colin Kaepernick and the #TakeAKnee movement was “likely” a deciding factor. News of Rihanna’s boycott tickled the virtue-signaling nerve of various celebrities, including feminist icon Amy Schumer. “Wouldn’t it be so cool if @adamlevine and @maroon5 stepped down too? What do you guys think?” Schumer wrote on Instagram Thursday. The next day, Schumer announced that she would no longer be performing in Super Bowl commercials and called on Maroon 5 to follow … [Read more...] about Rihanna Boycotts Super Bowl In Solidarity With Colin Kaepernick. 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Columbia Pictures, Focus Features, Eureka Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Disney Even if you spent your summers on the couch watching reruns of The Price Is Right with your babysitter Sonia who smelled like sweat and cheese balls stuck in braces instead of going to summer camp, everyone knows what camp feels like, thanks to the tons of summer-camp movies and TV shows (remember Salute Your Shorts ?) that we’ve seen over the years. With summer fully here, we thought it time we revisit some of those camps. What makes a summer-camp movie great has less to do with the experience of applying bug spray and learning to swim in the lake, and more to do with celebrating childhood, rebellion, groups of scrappy outsiders pitted against the more popular, and like-minded people banding together to make something impossible and wonderful happen. (Most of them have first kisses, too, thanks to all those girlfriends at summer camp that the other kids … [Read more...] about 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
After rail workers and barristers took to the picket lines in an effort to prevent their pay from falling far behind inflation, doctors are preparing industrial action of their own. At the British Medical Association’s annual conference, doctors said a real-terms pay cut in the last 12 years means they have effectively lost millions of pounds. GPs have also voted in favour of industrial action over a new contract that forces practices to open on Saturdays, expressing solidarity with rail unions by urging fellow medics to “channel our inner Mick Lynch” in protest at the new terms. But rather than seeking a pay rise slightly higher than the 3pc public sector cap sought by the Government, in exceptional cases — or even in line with the 11pc figure that inflation is expected to hit in October — the BMA is preparing to call for a 30pc increase over the next five years, one of the biggest demands in the history of industrial relations. “Calls for pay rises of up to 30pc are … [Read more...] about Doctors branded ‘delusional’ for 30pc pay rise demand
