Joe Biden promised to repeatedly ‘keep punching at’ domestic violence if he is elected President during Wednesday night’s Democratic debate in Atlanta. The former vice president drew some laughs from the audience as he appeared unaware of the metaphor he was using to describe how he would combat violence against women and sexual harassment. ‘No man has a right to raise a hand to a woman in anger other than in self-defense, and that rarely ever occurs,’ Biden said. ‘And so we have to just change the culture, period, and keep punching at it, and punching at it, and punching at it.’ Biden: Punch out domestic violence pic.twitter.com/9t9611BOlL— Salvador Hernandez (@SalHernandez) November 21, 2019 Former Vice President Joe Biden spoke about the need to 'punch at' domestic violence during Wednesday's Democratic debate in Atlanta Biden noted that he was one of the co-sponsors of the Violence Against Women Act, a federal law that was signed by … [Read more...] about Joe Biden insists people have to ‘keep punching’ at domestic violence and says the ‘ONLY’ black woman elected to the Senate endorsed him – prompting fellow Kamala Harris to remind him she’s also a senator
The vast and growing gap between rich and poor has been laid bare in a new Oxfam report showing that the 62 richest billionaires own as much wealth as the poorer half of the world’s population. Timed to coincide with this week’s gathering of many of the super-rich at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, the report calls for urgent action to deal with a trend showing that 1% of people own more wealth than the other 99% combined. Oxfam said that the wealth of the poorest 50% dropped by 41% between 2010 and 2015, despite an increase in the global population of 400m. In the same period, the wealth of the richest 62 people increased by $500bn (£350bn) to $1.76tn. The charity said that, in 2010, the 388 richest people owned the same wealth as the poorest 50%. This dropped to 80 in 2014 before falling again in 2015. Mark Goldring, the Oxfam GB chief executive, said: “It is simply unacceptable that the poorest half of the world population owns no more than a small … [Read more...] about Richest 62 people as wealthy as half of world’s population, says Oxfam
Spare a thought for the billionaires of the world: the combined wealth of the 20 richest people on the planet has fallen by more than $70bn (£50bn) following a slump on global financial markets. The latest annual ranking of billionaires by Forbes shows that falling share prices, a dramatic drop in the price of oil and volatile currency markets have shaken the global elite. The combined wealth of the top 20 has fallen from $899bn last year to $827bn and the number of billionaires in the world has shrunk from a record 1,826 in 2015 to 1,810. It is the first time in seven years that the number of billionaires has decreased, and is the first drop in the wealth of the top 20 since 2012. But more than a third of the $70bn decline was down to just one man: Carlos Slim. The Mexican telecoms tycoon has seen his fortune decrease from $77.1bn to $50bn in just 12 months. Shares in his bank, Grupo Financiero Inbursa, telecoms company América Móvil and mining group Minera Frisco have … [Read more...] about World’s 20 richest people are $70bn poorer, says Forbes
