Former American Idol star Caleb Kennedy granted bond after fatal car crash

May 21, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Caleb Kennedy, a former contestant on American Idol , has been given bond after being involved in a fatal car crash, it has been reported. On February 8 this year, Kennedy was said to have been behind the wheel of his truck when it was driven onto a private driveway, colliding with a building, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. A 54-year-old called Larry Parris was run over by Kennedy, investigators said, with the man dying from his injuries in hospital. At the time, the singer – who appeared on American Idol in 2021 – was charged with driving under the influence, resulting in the death of Parris. He has reportedly been in jail since February. On Friday May 20, a judge gave Kennedy a $50,000 (£40,000) bond, instructing him to receive treatment for his mental health while on home detention. ‘Very relieved Caleb got a bond. Should have never taken this long. We look forward to proving this was a terrible accident caused by his medication,’ said his attorney … [Read more...] about Former American Idol star Caleb Kennedy granted bond after fatal car crash

Drinking coffee ‘can reduce your risk of cancer’, scientists say

June 12, 2020 by www.mirror.co.uk

For many people, the day hasn’t really started before you’ve managed to get some coffee in your system. Now, new guidelines suggest that your coffee habit may help to reduce your risk of a number of cancers. New guidelines published by the American Cancer Society suggest that drinking coffee can reduce your risk of liver and endometrial cancer, cancer of the mouth, pharynx and larynx and skin cancer. The advice also suggests that drinking coffee may contribute to a reduced risk of some digestive cancers. The guidelines, which were developed by a research team led by Dr Cheryl Rock, explain: “Whether coffee consumption reduces or increases the risk of different types of cancers has been an active area of research. “Studies have suggested that coffee consumption likely reduces the risk of liver and endometrial cancers, although confounding by smoking may explain this latter association. Drinking coffee can reduce your risk of liver and endometrial cancer, cancer of the … [Read more...] about Drinking coffee ‘can reduce your risk of cancer’, scientists say

Pugs are not ‘typical dogs’ because of their ‘lifetime of suffering’, says study

May 18, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Pugs can no longer be considered a “typical dog” because extreme breeding has given them a long list of severe health issues . The desire for extreme, baby-like dogs with bulging eyes , folds of skin and flat faces has led to long-lasting and life-shortening health problems , which mean the animal is subjected to a “lifetime of suffering”. Dr Dan O’Neill, senior lecturer in companion animal epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, told The Telegraph that pugs lacked the “basic functions” expected of a canine. “We have dogs that are typical, like Labradors, where they have a long nose and a tail and are not that dissimilar to a wild dog,’’ he said. “Obviously, they have a different temperament but physically they just look like a wolf or a coyote or a dingo or a fox. “We’ve drafted a list of core body functions that any dog should expect to be able to do when it’s born and when it’s alive and these are very basic. “For example, they should be able to blink. Glasgow City Council to return ‘stolen’ artefacts to India

April 8, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Museums are facing pressure to return “stolen” artefacts to India after a council voted to repatriate a 14th century sword in a landmark vote. Glasgow councillors have backed a proposal to send back seven items taken out of India that eventually found their way into exhibitions across the city. Documents submitted to Glasgow City Council show officials from the High Commission of India lodged a request in January for the return of six artefacts “stolen” from Hindu temples and shrines in the 19th century. In March, an additional application made on behalf of the Indian Government asked for a 14th century tulwar, a sword used for ceremonial events, and its scabbard to be brought back after they were scavenged from the Deccan plateau. The items will now be transported to India after councillors recommended their return along with objects looted from Nigeria and belongings taken from a group of massacred Native Americans . The outcome was celebrated as the largest … [Read more...] about Glasgow City Council to return ‘stolen’ artefacts to India

BepiColombo: British spacecraft to blast off to Mercury and attempt to solve solar system’s mysteries

October 20, 2018 by www.independent.co.uk

A British-built spacecraft is about to blast off to Mercury . The BepiColombo ship will fly five billion miles to the planet that is closest to our sun. The scientists behind it hope that it can help solve some of the mysteries that hang over the distant world. It might, for instance, contain water ice, hidden in shadows on its otherwise blazing hot surface, scientists speculate – a discovery that could help shed light on the possibility of alien life in our own solar system. It will also look to explain why the planet has such as huge iron core at its centre, and unlock the history of the vast volcanic vents that shook its surface for billions of years. Nasa's most stunning pictures of space Show all 30 BepiColombo is due to blast off from the European spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana, at 2.45am UK time on Saturday October 20. Huntington Beach COVID “curfew breakers” rally to protest stay-at-home orders

November 22, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

A large crowd of people gathered in Huntington Beach to protest California's statewide curfew after it went into effect on Saturday night. The latest restrictions to combat a surge in coronavirus cases require the vast majority of Californians to stay at home from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless they are going out for essential work, responding to an emergency, shopping for groceries, picking up takeout or walking their dog. The curfew applies to 41 of California's 58 counties which remain in the purple tier—the most restrictive of the four tiers that permit various stages of economic reopening. Orange County, where Huntington Beach is located, is in the purple tier. But a crowd of people broke the curfew immediately after it was enacted to join a rally protesting the limited stay-at-home order. The "curfew breakers" protest was being planned to start at 10.01 p.m. at the Huntington Beach Pier on Saturday, according to a flier posted on Twitter by FoxLA reporter Bill Melugin. Flies manage to get inside for a number of reasons, but most enter to feed on rubbish, ripe fruit and veg or moisture. Common house flies are attracted to decaying organic filth such as rotting meat, whereas fruit flies look for sugary substances and feed more commonly on overripe fruit, spilt fizzy drinks and alcohol. Drain flies require moist climates and organic materials and will be attracted to drains like kitchen sinks, where they will also lay … [Read more...] about ‘Instantly deters flies’: ‘Great way’ to banish flies from homes – they ‘hate the smell’

In the second half of the 20th century, many North American archaeologists agreed on the idea that the Clovis people had been the first to reach the Americas. Their ancestors were thought to have crossed a land bridge linking Siberia to Alaska during the last ice age, but this land bridge — known as Beringia — later disappeared underwater as the ice slowly melted.
