Deep fat flyer: first flight powered by cooking oil could take off next year

May 14, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The age of guilt-free flying is to begin next year with the first transatlantic flight powered by cooking oil. In an article for The Telegraph (below), Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, said he was issuing a “historic challenge” to the aviation industry to complete the first net zero flight cross the Atlantic by the end of 2023. This would mean a flight powered by 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel made from waste materials such as used cooking oils, domestic and commercial black bag rubbish and flue gases. “We must act now to ensure that flying, so crucial to global connectivity in our fast-paced world, can continue without defeating our ambitions for tackling climate change ,” said Mr Shapps. “That’s why, as passenger demand and the aviation industry continue to rebound after the pandemic, we’re not just going back to pre-pandemic normal. “Instead I am committed to building a world-leading sustainable aviation fuel industry in the UK, improving fuel … [Read more...] about Deep fat flyer: first flight powered by cooking oil could take off next year

Climate change: British Airways reviews ‘fuel-tankering’ over climate concerns

November 11, 2019 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Justin Rowlatt Published 11 November 2019 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing British Airways has launched a review into a money-saving practice which increases its greenhouse gas emissions. It follows a BBC investigation exposing "fuel tankering" by airlines - in which planes are filled with extra fuel, usually to avoid paying higher prices for refuelling at destination airports. The industry-wide practice could mean extra annual emissions equivalent to those of a large European town. BA now says that using tankering to cut costs "may be the wrong thing to do". However, the airline added that it also uses the practice for safety and operational reasons, including helping planes to turn around quickly. BBC Panorama has discovered the airline's planes generated an extra 18,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide last year through fuel tankering. Cost savings made on … [Read more...] about Climate change: British Airways reviews ‘fuel-tankering’ over climate concerns

This Cardinal Is Trying to Save Chicago

November 21, 2016 by www.theatlantic.com

CHICAGO—Salvador Suarez died on Father’s Day in 2016, gunned down just feet from Holy Cross Church. He was walking down the street, police said, when a light-colored car pulled up and someone began firing a high-powered assault rifle, hitting Suarez multiple times. It was 1:30 in the afternoon. Inside the church, mass was going on. “After the shooting, the blood was spread all around on the sidewalk,” said Father Nnamdi Ebem, one of the parish’s pastors. “People were pretty shaken up. The gun that was used wasn’t the kind that we’re used to here. It was a military-grade weapon.” The shootings in his South Side neighborhood don’t happen every week, he said—only once or twice a month, and maybe not every month. It’s the sad reality that this is a sign of relative safety: At least 23 people reportedly died of gunshot wounds around Chicago during the week Suarez died. When the violence came to his door, Ebem did the only thing he could: He filled a bucket with water and soap, knelt with … [Read more...] about This Cardinal Is Trying to Save Chicago

More info In their 2019 manifesto, the Conservatives promised to match the average EU subsidy of about £1.5billion a year to help deprived areas of the UK "at a minimum" after the Brexit referendum's pledge to "take back control" from the bloc. However, details of the Shared Prosperity fund show that over the next three years it will only hand out £2.6billion and will not match the EU funding level until 2025. Dan Jarvis, the South Yorkshire mayor, said: “This announcement is nothing more than an outrage; a cynical Conservative con that utterly fails South Yorkshire and … [Read more...] about ‘An outrage’ Fury over EU funding betrayal after UK ‘takes back control’

Yemenia plane crash: girl survives as jet carrying 153 plunges into ocean

June 30, 2009 by www.theguardian.com

A 14-year-old girl may be the sole survivor from an Airbus A310-300 jet from Yemen carrying 153 people that crashed into the Indian Ocean off the Comoros islands early yesterday. Local officials said last night that the girl had been plucked from the sea after the plane went down in bad weather following a second aborted landing attempt at the international airport in Moroni, the capital of the archipelago. Three other bodies were reported to have been recovered. The plane, operated by Yemenia, the state operator, was on the final leg of a journey that began in Paris on Monday morning. In the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, the passengers changed planes, boarding an older aircraft that had been banned from French airspace after faults were found during tests in 2007. The Paris airports authority said 66 of the passengers were French, with most of the others from the Comoros, a former French colony. The aircraft was the second Airbus plane to crash into the sea in a month. On 1 … [Read more...] about Yemenia plane crash: girl survives as jet carrying 153 plunges into ocean

How Should America Deal With the Sinners in Its Prisons?

September 28, 2015 by www.theatlantic.com

There’s something macabre about hosting a photo-op inside of a prison. Waiting for the pope to arrive at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia on Sunday, inside walls topped with barbed wire, cameramen milled about while televisions blared. Harsh lights were trained on the papal chair, handmade by prisoners, which sat empty at the front of an elementary-school-style gymnasium. The early warning sign of a Francis sighting is always his entourage. Surrounded by hordes of men in black suits and cardinals in black cassocks, the pope’s white was striking. He changed the feel of the room, just barely, smiling with unmistakable delight at the row of female inmates seated at the front. Over the course of his six-day visit to the United States, Francis alternately preached and spoke; this was definitely preaching. He drew from the parable of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, urging inmates to embrace the possibility of redemption. “Life means ‘getting our feet … [Read more...] about How Should America Deal With the Sinners in Its Prisons?

A RARE Darth Vader costume is set to fetch up to £1.5million when it goes under the hammer today at an auction in Los Angeles. The 17-piece outfit donned by the evil Sith lord in the iconic 1980 Star Wars sequel The Empire Strikes Back includes gloves, boots, capes and a battery pack. Bruce ‘Kermit’ Eller, who made a career out of playing Darth Vader at public events, is selling his specially designed outfit. He made personal appearances as Anakin Skywalker for both the first and second Star Wars films. From 1977-1979, Kermit wore the original single suit made for the first film - which was worn by bodybuilder David Prowse on screen. As Vader, he appeared on the 1978 Academy Awards telecast, as well as in printed promotional material for the film. By 1979, the suit had seen better days, so for the next film, he was provided with one of the few complete costumes produced for The Empire Strikes Back. Eller continued to make personal appearances as Vader through 1981, … [Read more...] about Darth Vader costume from The Empire Strikes back set to fetch £1.5 MILLION at auction after 35 years stuffed inside suitcases

Bernie Sanders dropped out of the presidential race—so is Medicare for All dead?

April 8, 2020 by www.newsweek.com

Health care and the high cost of prescription drugs have consistently appeared as top concerns of voters in numerous polls, but Democratic voters across the country have largely rejected the candidates pushing for universal health care, or Medicare for All. The signature policy proposal of former Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who suspended his campaign on Wednesday, while appealing to many, does not appear to have resonated strongly enough with voters as the solution to address the perceived problems with the current health care status quo. Instead, many more voters backed candidates offering modest tweaks, namely expanding the Affordable Care Act, known commonly as Obamacare, and adding a public option for more Americans to gain access to Medicare. Former Democratic contender Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, dubbed his version of moderate health care reform, "Medicare for All who want it." Meanwhile, former Vice … [Read more...] about Bernie Sanders dropped out of the presidential race—so is Medicare for All dead?
