What happens now for Boris Johnson – and will he survive as Prime Minister?
Ten days ago Boris Johnson said he was mulling a third term until the mid-2030s. Now Tory MPs are questioning if he’ll survive the summer after the brutal resignations of his Chancellor and Health Secretary. Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid published their scathing letters nine minutes apart, just as the PM was due to summon a meeting of his loyalists. It comes after the Prime Minister was accused of lying about whether he knew of allegations against the Tory MP Chris Pincher, who has denied a series of allegations dating back over the last decade. For many Conservatives, how No10 dealt with the claims has been the final straw after months of questions about the PM’s integrity. 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
Photo: Maya Robinson and Photos by Columbia Pictures, Focus Features, Eureka Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Disney Even if you spent your summers on the couch watching reruns of The Price Is Right with your babysitter Sonia who smelled like sweat and cheese balls stuck in braces instead of going to summer camp, everyone knows what camp feels like, thanks to the tons of summer-camp movies and TV shows (remember Salute Your Shorts ?) that we’ve seen over the years. With summer fully here, we thought it time we revisit some of those camps. What makes a summer-camp movie great has less to do with the experience of applying bug spray and learning to swim in the lake, and more to do with celebrating childhood, rebellion, groups of scrappy outsiders pitted against the more popular, and like-minded people banding together to make something impossible and wonderful happen. (Most of them have first kisses, too, thanks to all those girlfriends at summer camp that the other kids … [Read more...] about 15 Classic Summer-Camp Movies, Ranked
How clever army ants create ‘living bridges’ with their bodies using simple maths rules
Fascinating footage shows how army ants work together to build bridges with their own bodies. The clip shows ants clambering over one another to traverse gaps in a series of different scenarios. It was captured as part of a new study that explored how ants follow simple rules and use basic algorithms to build dynamic 'living' structures. The study, from experts at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, showed that the ants may even opt to build bridges out of themselves when they find a gap on their route. Lead researcher Dr Simon Garnier said: 'In the past, there has been a lot of descriptive work of the structures built by these ants. 'The originality of our work was the creation of experimental setups that we could bring to the tropical forest in order to experimentally control the conditions under which the ants build bridges to shortcut deviations along their trails.' Watch: The moment Dominic Raab is wrong-footed by Lord McDonald’s letter on Chris Pincher
Dominic Raab said it was “news to me” that Boris Johnson was allegedly directly told about a formal complaint against Chris Pincher, after claims by a former top official . Mr Raab appeared to learn about a letter from Lord McDonald , which accused Number 10 of lying, live on breakfast television. He continued to insist he did not think Mr Johnson was “directly briefed”. The Justice Secretary repeatedly suggested that Mr Johnson was unaware of any specific details over a complaint made in 2019 against Mr Pincher, who resigned from the Government after a series of allegations emerged last week. Lord McDonald, the former permanent secretary at the Foreign Office, said in a letter that Mr Johnson had been briefed “in person” about the investigation. He accused Downing Street of “telling the truth and crossing your fingers at the same time”, claiming the allegations were “‘resolved’ only in the sense that the investigation was completed; Mr Pincher was not exonerated”. Mr … [Read more...] about Watch: The moment Dominic Raab is wrong-footed by Lord McDonald’s letter on Chris Pincher
Inside the Head of an Aging Serial Killer
When Jeff Lindsay first wrote his Dexter novels, about a blood-spatter analyst who kills bad people in his spare time, he unintentionally kicked off a modern love affair with the fictionalized serial killer. In the years following Dexter Morgan’s televised debut on Showtime, humanizing portrayals of murderous antiheroes have increased. There’s the protagonist of Hannibal , whose artistic refinement drew an FBI agent to him. In a slightly different mold, there’s John Tavner of Amazon’s Patriot , a traumatized hitman who bungles jobs and would rather play music, and the titular character of HBO’s Barry , a reluctant gun for hire who just wants to act; these killers take lives grudgingly, as if murder were a monotonous day job. Viewers, in turn, get a relatable, largely genial protagonist to root for. The writer Kim Young-ha recognizes, and challenges, this cultural sympathy for the serial killer with his recent collection of short stories, Diary of a Murderer . The … [Read more...] about Inside the Head of an Aging Serial Killer
