log4j: Tech companies scramble to fix software vulnerability that ‘threatens entire internet’
Tech companies across the world are under pressure to fix a software vulnerability that many cybersecurity experts are calling one of the worst to be discovered in recent years. The vulnerability, known as Log4shell, was identified in Apache ’s Log4j software library that helps developers keep track of changes in the applications they build. The software flaw was first noticed on sites catering to the popular video game Minecraft , and was officially reported to Apache on 24 November by Chen Zhaojun of Alibaba, according to Crowdstrike. But it soon became clear that the vulnerability had far-reaching implications since the software is ubiquitous, used in millions of applications across the internet , including Amazon Web Services, Apple’s iCloud, and the video game distribution service Steam. Experts say the vulnerability can allow hackers to control java-based web servers and enable them to execute remote code execution (RCE) attacks, which they may use to … [Read more...] about log4j: Tech companies scramble to fix software vulnerability that ‘threatens entire internet’
Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers
Paul Paolucci, the top cop for one of the world’s biggest credit card companies, sure had some interesting friends. One made a fortune fronting for pornography websites that needed access to Mastercard’s and Visa’s payment networks. Paolucci, who oversaw Mastercard’s merchant fraud control, was photographed cavorting around the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel with him and a group of women in white corset minidresses. A second was a Lamborghini-driving e-commerce mogul with whom Paolucci used to celebrate family holidays. The mogul ended up in prison for a financial crime he committed, in part, using Mastercard’s network. An executive at a famously corrupt European bank claimed to have dined with Paolucci and gotten his help evading Mastercard’s regulations. It was Paolucci’s job to make sure that the banks and companies using Mastercard’s network were playing by the rules. He bent those rules himself by getting close to the very kinds of high-risk businesses he was supposed to be … [Read more...] about Two-Card Monte: Why Mastercard And Visa Rarely Shut Down Scammers Who Are Ripping Off Consumers
Russia takes over Renault factory to bring Soviet-era old banger back to life
Moscow has announced plans to take over a Renault car factory to revive the Soviet-era Moskvitch brand in the first major case of nationalisation of Western assets since the invasion of Ukraine. Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, said in a vaguely worded statement on Monday that the Russian capital would re-open the city’s car plant owned by the French carmaker. "The foreign owner has decided to shut down the Renault plant in Moscow. It is their right but we cannot allow thousands of its workers to lose their jobs," Mr Sobyanin said. "I have made the decision to put the factory on the city’s balance sheet and resume the production of passenger vehicles under the historic Moskvitch brand." The announcement comes after a flurry of global companies suspended their operations or withdrew from Russia altogether following the start of the war and the implementation of crippling economic sanctions. Renault said on Monday that its board of directors had approved the sale … [Read more...] about Russia takes over Renault factory to bring Soviet-era old banger back to life
Have we had enough of Netflix?
By Jennifer Meierhans & Alex Taylor Published 22 April Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Trying to watch some of Netflix's more recent series all the way through, says Paul Weiner, feels a bit like cramming frankfurters down your throat in a hotdog eating contest. Readers outside the US may not share the American enthusiasm for competitive hotdog swallowing. But maybe they can relate to the feeling. We've all spent the last few years, the last two especially, binge-watching, indiscriminately, too mesmerised to click the off-button. Are we maybe just a little bit sick of it? That's the fear seizing executives in Netflix's boardroom right now. That Mr Weiner, a 28-year-old artist from Denver, Colorado, who loved the streaming service at first, especially for watching old favourites like Star Trek and The Office, typifies a new mood. That after years of skyrocketing … [Read more...] about Have we had enough of Netflix?
Dow dives more than 1,100 points on renewed inflation fears
Stocks plummeted on Wall Street Wednesday, as poor results from retailers led to renewed fears that inflation could chill consumer spending and corporate profits. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 1,164 points, or 3.6%, to close at 31,490. The S&P 500 lost 4% on its worst day since 2020, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 4.7%. "The growth scare that hovers over the market intermittently has intensified as market participants are factoring in a deeper slowdown," Quincy Krosby, chief equity strategist for LPL Financial, said in a note. The selloff was led by steep drops in retailers as Target plunged after issuing a grim quarterly earnings report. Target lost a quarter of its value after reporting earnings that fell far short of analysts' forecasts, while citing higher costs. The report comes a day after Walmart said its profit took a hit from higher costs. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer fell 6.6%, adding to its losses from Tuesday. The weak … [Read more...] about Dow dives more than 1,100 points on renewed inflation fears
Asian shares track Wall Street’s inflation-fueled retreat
Shares dropped sharply in Asia on Thursday after a broad retreat on Wall Street triggered by dismal results from major retailer Target that added to worries over persisting high inflation. Shares fell in all regional markets except Indonesia's. Oil prices were higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than 1,100 points, or 3.6%, and the S&P 500 had its biggest drop in nearly two years Wednesday, shedding 4%. That was its steepest decline since June 2020. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 4.7%. The benchmark index is now down more than 18% from the record high it reached at the beginning of the year. That's shy of the 20% decline that's considered a bear market. “The sentiment in the market is highly negative as traders and investors are largely concerned about an economic downturn and soaring inflation," Naeem Aslam of Avatrade said in a commentary. Vladimir Putin threatens ‘response’ if Nato military infrastructure deployed on Nordic soil
Vladimir Putin has warned Nato against building military bases or positioning missile systems in Sweden or Finland, declaring that doing so would "certainly provoke a response". "There is no immediate threat to Russia," the Russian leader said of the Nordic nations' decision to join the security alliance. "But the expansion of military infrastructure into this territory would certainly provoke our response ." Sweden's prime minister Magdalena Andersson on Monday announced that her country would apply to join Nato, ending the country's two centuries of neutrality or military non-alignment. "We are leaving one era and entering another," Ms Andersson said. "A Swedish Nato membership will increase the threshold for military conflict in Sweden and in our neighbourhood." Ms Andersson's announcement came just a day after Finland's president and prime minister made a similar announcement, with the two countries' parliaments on Monday both holding marathon debates to mark the shift. … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin threatens ‘response’ if Nato military infrastructure deployed on Nordic soil
‘Why I sell my breast milk to strangers’
Published 12 October 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The online breast milk business is becoming more and more lucrative, despite health warnings. But why are mothers choosing to sell their milk to strangers? Jade Biddle is one of a growing number of mothers choosing to sell their breast milk on the internet. She only started advertising a month ago but she's already getting at least two inquiries a day. The 22-year-old from Leominster, Herefordshire, got the idea after watching an interview about the issue on television. "It was in my head from there," she said. "I thought about donating it to a hospital but there was a screening process and I didn't want to go through that. So I thought 'if I've got it spare, why not?'"
