The reduction in Russian gas exports has sent global prices soaring , but Moscow has denied using energy as a political weapon. What is Nord Stream 1 and how much gas does it supply? The Nord Stream 1 pipeline stretches 1,200km (745 miles) under the Baltic Sea from the Russian coast near St Petersburg to north-eastern Germany. It opened in 2011, and can send a maximum of 170m cubic metres of gas per day from Russia to Germany. The pipeline is owned and operated by Nord Stream AG, whose majority shareholder is the Russian state-owned company Gazprom. Few would blame Liz Truss for reaching for every lever at her disposal to try and isolate the UK from Russia’s fuel war with Europe. Alongside the significant package of support mustered for households and businesses, the Government’s aim to end the short-term approach to energy security and supply should be welcomed. Looking beyond this winter, we urgently need an exit strategy that reduces our exposure to the price volatility of fossil fuels. Part of the answer - as the Government has noted in its recent announcements - is to embrace the homegrown solution of cleaner sources of energy that won’t deplete over time, in the form of renewables like wind and solar power supported by nuclear as necessary. The latest auction for new generation sources of energy secured prices for renewables that are nine times cheaper than current high electricity prices set by gas generation. These forms of energy are already holding prices slightly lower than they would otherwise be, but … [Read more...] about Why foot-dragging on heat pumps and wind turbines only empowers Putin
The EU has declared three leaks in two Russia-Germany gas pipelines to be the work of sabotage and suspicion has fallen on Russia. Some commentators have suggested the leaks are linked to the Ukraine war, though the Kremlin has described the accusations it was behind them as "predictable" and "stupid". Here is what we know about what happened to Nord Stream 1 and 2, who could have been responsible and what's being done about it. What happened and where On Monday morning, at around 2am local time, bubbles are thought to have started erupting on the surface of a section of the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Poland, about 14 miles (23km) southeast of Denmark's Bornholm Island. That morning, it was reported that pressure in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline had dropped overnight from 105 bars to 7 bars, indicating a leak. The Nord Stream 2 pipe runs for 764 miles (1,230km) from Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany and had been due to carry billions of cubic feet of gas to … [Read more...] about ‘Sabotage’: What we know about the Nord Stream gas leaks and who was behind them

Western countries are trying to cut their dependency on Russian oil and gas following the invasion of Ukraine in February. How much Russian gas does Europe use? Russia supplied the EU with 40% of its natural gas last year. Germany, Europe's largest economy, was the largest importer in 2021, followed by Italy. In 2021, the UK imported 4% of its needs from Russia, and in June this year, it imported no Russian gas for the third month in a row. The US doesn't import any gas from Russia. However, they are affected when Russia restricts supplies to mainland Europe, as this causes … [Read more...] about Russia sanctions: How can the world cope without its oil and gas?
Square Enix attempts to take on Fire Emblem at its own game, with a more modern, real-time approach to combat. During the late 90s and early 2000s, real-time strategy games like Command & Conquer and StarCraft enjoyed massive popularity. They typically gave you control of entire armies, from gathering the raw resources that went into constructing vehicles and aircraft, to directing individual units in battle. Everything from supply lines to tactics was under your aegis. Rather than being proof that mainstream gamers aren’t interested in strategy titles turn-based strategy games have grown in popularity at the same time as real-time ones have fallen away. Which is ironic, because originally real-time strategy games were meant to be the cool, new action-based evolution of a once staid genre. The Fire Emblem series is one of the main beneficiaries of this change in fortunes, a series which The DioField Chronicles owes an obvious debt of inspiration to. Square Enix’s game … [Read more...] about The DioField Chronicles review – emblematic problems
